No. 8 Field Hockey Downs Penn on the Road, 4-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Four first half goals made the difference for No. 8 Harvard field hockey in its trip to the Keystone State, as the Crimson defeated Penn, 4-0, on the road this afternoon.

The Ivy League's leading goal scorer during the 2025 season, senior forward Sage Piekarski led the way with a pair of goals, as junior midfielder and team captain Tilly Butterworth and sophomore forward Lucy Barker also found the back of the cage against the Quakers.

Harvard's defense of first-year Elin van Sante, senior Smilla Klas and junior Paige Cornelius allowed just six shots across 60 minutes of action, as sophomore goalkeeper Linde Burger and first-year keeper Jenny Lee combined for the third shutout of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Harvard (7-1, 3-0 Ivy League) started the match against Penn (1-7, 0-3) on the front foot, taking the first five shots of the game while holding the hosts to zero attempts in the first quarter. With 4:52 on the clock, the Crimson opened the score, as Piekarski collected a rebound off a shot from senior midfielder Lara Beekhuis and converted the chance, 1-0. A native of Concord, Massachusetts, Piekarski now has 36 goals and 82 points in her collegiate career.

Moments later, Harvard doubled its lead. On the Crimson's second penalty corner of the day, Butterworth saw her initial shot from the top of the circle blocked, as she stayed with the play and slotted the rebound into the left side of the cage to extend Harvard's lead, 2-0.

Across the first 15 minutes at Ellen Vagelos Field, Harvard recorded seven shots and held Penn to zero attempts, as the Crimson attempted two penalty corners in the first quarter.

Within the first two minutes of the second quarter, Harvard produced a third goal. Controlling the ball on the right side of the baseline, junior midfielder Martha le Huray found Barker darting to the back post, as the sophomore poked the ball into the cage to grow the Harvard advantage, 3-0.

In the late stages of the first half, the Crimson found the back of the cage again, as Piekarski evaded multiple defenders in the cage and pushed a shot past the Quakers keeper to put Harvard ahead, 4-0, heading into the halftime intermission.
The first half saw Harvard record 12 shots, while the Crimson limited the hosts to just one shot in the first and second quarters.

Harvard kept its solid defensive play going in the third quarter, keeping the Quakers off the board and preserving the 4-0 lead. From there, the Crimson defense would continue to define the contest, holding Penn scoreless in the fourth quarter to secure the 4-0 victory.

In 60 minutes of action, Harvard recorded 18 shots while holding Penn to just six. Piekarski tallied two goals in a game for the first time this season, as she is the first student-athlete this season to net two or more goals in a game this year.
