SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Harvard softball continued its time in South Carolina by splitting a doubleheader, taking down intrastate foe Holy Cross, 9-0, for a second time in two days and then dropping a 6-0 decision against tournament host Wofford.
The Crimson recorded its first run-rule victory of the season against the Crusaders, as four different Crimson drove in runs in the win. Junior pitcher
Nicolette Hunter shined in the circle, posting a complete game five inning shutout, only allowing two hits with a career-best 10 strikeouts. At the dish, senior infielder
Finley Payne drove in four runs, another career-best.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
Just like it did in the weekend opener, Harvard (4-4, 0-0 Ivy League) wasted no time scoring runs against Holy Cross (0-4, 0-0 Patriot League), striking first in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back walks from junior outfielder and team captain
Audrey Szollosi and junior infielder
Sophie Sun put two runners on for Payne, as the Liberty Township, Ohio native cleared bases with a two-run RBI double, 2-0.
The Crimson doubled the lead just an inning later. With the bases loaded, Szollosi scored a run with a single right back up the middle of the infield, 3-0, as a groundout from Sun tallied another run to put Harvard up 4-0 heading into the third.
In the third inning, the Crimson offense generated a huge showing, scoring five runs to pave the path for the run-rule victory. With another bases loaded chance, first-year outfielder
Sheila Forbes tallied another run, as Szollosi walked in another run to push the Harvard lead to six. A groundout from Sun tallied another run, as Payne produced at the plate again with a two-run RBI single to secure the 9-0 run-rule win.
Hunter was superb in the circle, tossing a five-inning complete game shutouts, allowing only two hits and setting a new career-high in strikeouts with 10. Harvard scored nine runs on nine hits, as four different Crimson drove in runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
Wofford (13-1, 0-0 SOCON) got out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in the first inning and two runs in the second inning. After a scoreless third inning, the Terriers added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend the lead, 6-0.
The Crimson would put traffic on the base paths in the final three frames of the contest, but the hosts held on for a 6-0 win. Szollosi extended her hitting-streak to five games, as sophomore infielder
Alexa Muller added a hit as well.
In the circle, first-year pitcher
Serena Gillen struck out a career-high four batters in 3.0 innings of work.
