ALBANY, N.Y. – The Crimson fell in overtime this afternoon in Albany after the Great Danes netted the game-winning goal with 55 seconds remaining in overtime to lift UAlbany past Harvard, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon at John Fallon Field.
After Hannah Shiels tied the game with just 10 seconds left in regulation, the Crimson erased a two-goal deficit in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Great Danes scored the golden goal in the extra frame to win the game.
A game that featured multiple momentum swings and six ties, both teams converted on key free-position and woman-up opportunities throughout the afternoon in a tightly contested matchup.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Harvard struck first as Emerson Midura opened the scoring at 13:15 of the first quarter before Charlotte Hodgson doubled the lead to make it 2-0. UAlbany responded with four straight goals over the final eight minutes of the quarter to take a 4-2 lead after one.
The Crimson evened the game early in the second quarter with back-to-back woman-up goals. Stella Shea finished on the advantage at 14:11 before Callie Batchelder converted a free-position attempt to knot the score at four. UAlbany answered with three of the next four goals, to take a 7-5 lead into halftime after Tori Balser scored with 27 seconds remaining.
In the third quarter, Kate Gilliam buried a free-position chance to cut the deficit to 8-6 before Charlotte Hodgson added another to make it 9-7.
After Callie Batchelder finished off a feed from Grace Mullahy to bring Harvard within one, UAlbany converted a late woman-up opportunity to push its advantage to 10-8 entering the fourth.
Batchelder opened the final quarter with her third goal of the day to make it 10-9, but UAlbany responded to stretch the lead to 12-10 with just over four minutes to play. Gilliam converted another free-position opportunity at 5:50 before Hodgson scored on a man-up chance at 3:21 to bring the Crimson within one.
With time winding down, Shiels buried a free-position shot with 10 seconds remaining to tie the game at 12 and send it to overtime.
In the extra period, both teams traded possessions before UAlbany broke through. Albany was able to find space inside and finished the game-winner to secure a 13-12 win.
