Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Earns Fifth Straight Road Win, Defeats Dartmouth, 71-58

HANOVER, N.H. – Harvard men's basketball continued to roll this evening, posting its fifth consecutive road victory with a 71-58 win over Dartmouth. The Crimson (13-9, 6-2 Ivy) remains at the top of the Ivy League standings with the result, which was the team's sixth win in its past seven games. Another solid defensive showing, coupled with a consistent offensive performance from up and down the roster helped the team to another key Ivy League win.

Robert Hinton had yet another stellar game, posting a team high 19 points and nine rebounds while going 7-for-14 from the field and 4-of-4 from the foul line. His classmate, Tey Barbour was right behind him with an 18-point effort that was fueled by a 4-of-8 shooting clip from three-point range. Barbour chipped in with five rebounds and two assists to help Harvard on the offensive end.

One of the best defensive teams in the Ivy League, Harvard once again locked in, holding Dartmouth to under 60 points and a 33.9-percent field goal percentage, the team's second worst mark this season. On the other end, the Crimson shot an efficient 47.8-percent from the field, which helped the team pull away in the second half to earn the win on the road.

Harvard Highlights

  • Harvard posted its fifth consecutive road win and its sixth win in the last seven games.
  • Robert Hinton led the Crimson with 19 points off a 7-of-14 shooting night from the floor. The sophomore added a team-best nine rebounds in the contest to match his career high.
  • Tey Barbour continued his strong stretch of games with an 18-point effort. The sophomore went 4-for-8 from three-point range to build up his total. He also chipped in on the glass with three rebounds.
  • Thomas Batties II posted 14 points to go along with five rebounds. The big man also led the team with a +17 rating in the contest.
  • Chandler Piggé stuffed the stat sheet yet again with 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • Harvard had another strong showing from the foul line, shooting 16-of-18 for a 88.9-percent clip.
  • The Crimson outrebounded the Big Green, 37-29.
  • Harvard never trailed in the contest and led the game for nearly 38 minutes.
  • The defensive effort from the Crimson was dominant, limited Dartmouth to only 58 points and a 33.9-percent shooting percentage (19-for-56) which was the second lowest clip of the Big Green's season.

How it Happened

• Harvard took control early, opening a 9-5 lead early in the contest behind a three-pointer from Batties II and buckets from Eisendrath and Piggé.
• The defenses locked in in the middle of the half, as the teams combined for just 18 points in nearly nine minutes of action, making the score 18-14 at the under-eight timeout in the first half. A timely "and-one" bucket from Batties II ended a mini-scoring run for the Big Green heading into the break.
• Dartmouth did not shy away, clawing back into the contest yet again late in the first, bringing the Harvard lead down to one at 23-22 with five minutes remaining in the half.
• Another timely shot from Robert Hinton ended the run, but Dartmouh quicklly matched with a three-pointer of its own to keep the game going back-and forth. Eisendrath hit a pair of big free throws, and Barbour added two points with a layup in the closing minutes of the first half to help Harvard go into the break with a 32-30 advantage.
• Harvard built up its lead to start the second half, using a 7-1 scoring run to take an eight-point lead at 39-31. Hinton added four more points in the stretch, aided by baskets from both Barbour and Piggé. Dartmouth looked to counter, but Barbour knocked down another three-pointer to deflate the comeback effort and make the score 42-33 with 14 minutes remaining.
• Dartmouth continued to battle back, shrinking what became a 12-point Crimson advantage to just six at the 6:30 mark in the half. Barbour – once again – put a stop the comeback effort, nailing back-to-back-to-back three-point attempts to give Harvard a 59-48 lead with less than five minutes to play
• Strong foul shooting and defense in the closing minutes helped Harvard maintain the lead and earn a 71-58 win over Dartmouth.

Post-game Quotes
"I'm just really happy for our guys, they're showing growth and development. We're still a very young team, we're playing one senior and one junior, and everyone else is younger than that. We're starting to see some chemistry developing, and just as important as anything, you're seeing confidence building. This isn't an easy place to win." - Tommy Amaker

"We're running our same philosophy offensively, we've tweaked some things based on personnel and I just think we're more confident and more experienced, and our guys are trusting themselves a little more. That's when you start seeing a team playing better offensively, it has to do with their unselfishness and their trust." - Tommy Amaker
