FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Explosive performances at the plate and dominant outings in the circle lifted Harvard softball to a pair of convincing victories against Sacred Heart on the road.
Game one saw junior pitcher
Nicolette Hunter go the distance, as the Camarillo, California native allowed just one run and struck out five batters in her third complete game of the year, leading the Crimson to a 4-1 win to start the day. Offensively, three different Crimson drove in runs, as junior infielder
Sophie Sun launched her fourth home run of the season in the fifth inning.
Harvard carried that offensive spark into the second game of the twinbill, as the Crimson tallied a new season-high in runs in the 11-3 victory against the Pioneers. Four Crimson produced multi-hit efforts in the dominant win, led by a career day from sophomore catcher
Hailey Neuner. A native of Wildwood, Missouri, Neuner recorded career-highs in both hits (3) and RBIs (2) to lead the Crimson offensive display.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE
After two scoreless frames to start the day, it was Harvard (8-11-1, 0-0 Ivy League) that started the scoring in the top of the third. With two runners on, senior infielder
Finley Payne lofted a pitch into left center field, scoring the opening run of the day with an RBI double, 1-0.
Sacred Heart (7-16, 4-2 Metro Atlantic) would even the score at one all in the bottom of the fourth, as Harvard orchestrated an immediate response in the top of the fifth. After an error to start the frame, Sun sent a shot past the wall in center field, putting Harvard up, 3-1, with a two-run home run. A native of Austin, Texas, Sun leads the Crimson in both home runs (4) and RBIs (22) this season.
Harvard didn't stop there in the fifth inning. Following Sun's home run, Payne continued the inning with a single, as first-year infielder
Hannah Ziecik found the gap in left center field to score the fourth and final run of the contest for the Crimson with an RBI double.
Hunter silenced the hosts in the sixth and seventh inning, as the Crimson picked up the 4-1 win against Sacred Heart. Harvard tallied four runs on six hits, as Hunter tossed a complete game with five strikeouts, six hits and just one run allowed. Sun drove in two runs, as she has now drove in multiple runs in three-straight contests.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO
The hosts would open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a pair of runs off a home run. Harvard would waste no time in gaining the lead, putting up six runs in its half of the second inning.
A leadoff double from Ziecik, followed by walks from sophomore infielder
Alexa Muller and Hunter, loaded the bases for Neuner. The Crimson's catcher capitalized on the moment, leveling the score at two with a two-run RBI single. With the bases loaded again, junior outfielder and team captain
Audrey Szollosi scored a run with a walk, 3-2, as a ground out from first-year
Sheila Forbes and an RBI single from Sun brought in an additional two runs, 6-2.
The Crimson struck again in the top of the fourth inning. The heart of the order was once again key in producing runs, as Sun found the gap with a double to lead things off. A stellar plate approach proved key for Ziecik, as she snuck a hit between third base and second for an RBI single, 7-2.
The hosts scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, 7-3, as the Crimson ended the contest on an emphatic note with four runs in the top of the seventh. Pioneer fielding errors in back-to-back at bats allowed two runs to score, as Muller wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single, 11-3.
Harvard scored a season-high 11 runs on 10 hits, reaching the double-digit hit tally in a game for the sixth time this season. Senior pitcher
Riley Flynn struck out a career-high 12 batters in her first complete game showing of the year, allowing just four hits and three runs. Neuner also produced career-bests at the plate with three hits and two RBIs.
