CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Mick Thompson netted the overtime winner with nearly a minute left in the overtime period as the Crimson beat St. Lawrence, 4-3, on Friday night to advance to the ECAC quarterfinals.
Trailing by a goal three separate times in the game, the Crimson clawed back each time to force overtime before Thompson's game-winner kept the season alive.
An exciting game from the moment the puck dropped, four different goal scorers found the back of the net as the Crimson advanced to its 10th consecutive ECAC quarterfinal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Lawrence opened the scoring two minutes into the game after a couple of cracks in front of the net following a defensive breakdown.
Ben Charette, as he did multiple times throughout the evening, followed the Saints' goal with a big save on a partial breakaway to keep the score where it was.
Aidan Lane responded for the Crimson with his first goal since Dec. 6 on a one-timer from the circle to knot the game at one. On a beautiful passing play, the puck eventually found its way down to Richard Gallant on the goal line, who threw a no-look pass to Lane, who made no mistake in tying it up on the man advantage.
The game was tied after the first 20 minutes of play.
Ten minutes into the second, the Saints took another lead after a shot from the point was deflected past Charette. Shortly after the St. Lawrence goal, Marek Hejduk was sent to the box as the PK unit came out for the first time.
While shorthanded, Heikki Ruohonen forced a turnover, out muscled the defender, and worked his way toward the net before beating Smith five-hole for the highlight-reel goal. His third goal in his last three games, Ruohonen has scored some big goals for the Crimson this season.
The Saints took their third lead of the game after Ledrew picked the corner on Charette to give the Saints a massive one-goal lead with 12:20 left to play in the third.
With its backs against the wall, the Crimson tied the game with 4:19 left in the third period after Michael Callow jammed home a rebound to send the game to overtime. Heikki Ruohonen threw the puck on net, and Callow jammed it home. Callow now has goals in two of his last three games.
Overtime saw more back-and-forth action, with both teams having chances to end it. Charette made a stellar stop on a tricky play from the Saints on the goal line, while Richard Gallant nearly ended the game on a bouncing puck right outside the blue paint.
With 1:43 left in overtime, Casey Severo won the faceoff, and Thompson immediately threw a loose puck on net and followed his own rebound for the game-winning goal. Picking the far side on the backhand, Thompson's overtime winner closed out the home hockey season with a win.
