Cambridge, Mass. – Harvard Crimson men's volleyball battled St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans men's volleyball through five sets Saturday night at the Malkin Athletic Center, ultimately falling 3–2 (25–20, 25–16, 23–25, 18–25, 15–11). The match marked Harvard's first five-set contest of the season and featured long rallies, quick defensive reactions, and momentum swings from both sides.
How it Happened
The first set stayed tight early, with the teams trading points throughout much of the frame. Harvard's offense saw contributions from Quinn Bishop, Sawyer Nichols, and Zach Berty as the Crimson kept pace. St. Thomas Aquinas found a late push, however, pulling ahead in the closing points to take the set 25–20.
Berty helped lead the Crimson attack in the second set, putting down several kills to keep Harvard within reach. Bishop added a spark from the service line with back-to-back aces during a mid-set run, but the Spartans held onto the advantage late to secure the set 25–16 and a 2–0 lead in the match.
Harvard responded in the third with strong serving pressure, recording three service aces in the set. Berty continued to provide offensive production as the Crimson gradually chipped away and edged St. Thomas Aquinas 25–23 to extend the match.
The Crimson followed with their most efficient set of the night in the fourth. Harvard hit .364 while adding five blocks at the net to slow the Spartans' offense. The balanced performance helped Harvard take the set 25–18 and force a decisive fifth.
The final set featured several extended rallies as both teams fought to keep the ball alive. Harvard generated multiple strong kills but was unable to fully capitalize on key defensive stops, allowing St. Thomas Aquinas to pull ahead late and claim the set 15–11.
