Baseball Beats Dartmouth in Series Finale, 7-6, to Split Saturday Doubleheader

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Cullen Stone hit a bases-clearing double before sophomore Gavin Smith posted the go-ahead RBI single in an eighth-inning rally as Harvard University baseball came back to beat Dartmouth College, 7-6, in the series finale after the visitors took the game's first contest, 6-4, in 12 innings on Saturday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.
 
Competing in an Ivy League doubleheader to close the series, the Crimson (8-21, 6-8 Ivy) rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the eighth to take the set's final contest after the two teams went to extra innings in the day's opening game with the Big Green (10-19, 6-9 Ivy) plating the go-ahead runs in the 12th after the two teams entered extra innings tied at 3-3.
 
At the close of Saturday's contests, Harvard stands in a tie for fourth place in the Ivy League standings with Columbia (6-8 Ivy) with the Lions set to close their series with Brown on Sunday.
 
In game one, senior right-hander Jack Smith threw a season-high 4.1 innings, permitting no runs on no hits and no walks with a season-best three strikeouts. At the plate, junior Jack Rickheim went 2-for-5 with an RBI, junior Tyler Shulman notched a pair of RBIs, senior Gio Colasante finished 2-for-5 with a double, and senior Jordan Kang posted two hits and an RBI.
 
In game two, Stone tallied three RBIs, a double, and a run while Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Colasante tallied a home run – his seventh of the season – with two RBIs. Senior left-hander Brian Dowling earned the win, throwing 3.0 scoreless innings and allowing no runs on one hit and one walk before sophomore left-hander Luca Alagheband captured the save, hurling 1.0 inning and permitting no runs on one hit and no walks. 
   

Game 1: Dartmouth 6, Harvard 4 (12 Innings)

Senior right-hander Jack Smith threw 4.1 innings without allowing a base runner and three Crimson posted multi-hit games, but Harvard fell to Dartmouth, 6-4, in 12 innings in the first game of the doubleheader.
 
Competing in the second game of the weekend series, the Crimson tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth and knotted it again at 4-4 in the last of the 10th before the Big Green scored a pair of runs in the top of the 12th to take the decision in extra innings.
 
Smith threw a season-high 4.1 innings, permitting no runs on no hits and no walks with a season-best three strikeouts.
 
At the plate, junior Jack Rickheim went 2-for-5 with an RBI, junior Tyler Shulman notched a pair of RBIs, senior Gio Colasante finished 2-for-5 with a double, and senior Jordan Kang posted two hits and an RBI.

How It Happened

  • Dartmouth opened the game's scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Big Green added a run in the top of the fifth to move ahead 3-0.
  • The Crimson responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the score at 3-3. Rickheim brought in a run with a bases-loaded walk before Shulman sent a two-run single into right center to tie the game.
  • Smith did not allow a Big Green base runner to reach over the sixth through ninth innings.
  • The visitors pulled ahead, 4-3, with a run in the top of the 10th on a ground ball.
  • Harvard answered in the last half of the 10th as an RBI single through the left side from Kang once again brought the Crimson even with Dartmouth at 10-10.
  • Dartmouth scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the 12th behind a two-run single up the middle for the final score of 6-4. 

Game 2: Harvard 7, Dartmouth 6

Sophomore Cullen Stone hit a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the eighth, sophomore Gavin Smith notched the go-ahead RBI also in the eighth, and sophomore left-lander Luca Alagheband induced a double play for the game's final two outs as Harvard rallied past Dartmouth, 7-6, in the second game of the doubleheader.
 
Competing in the series finale, the Crimson rallied from a 6-3 deficit entering the eighth, scoring four times in the bottom of the eighth to earn the come-from-behind win over the Big Green.
 
Stone tallied three RBIs, a double, and a run while Smith went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Senior Gio Colasante tallied a home run – his seventh of the season – with two RBIs.

  • Junior right-hander Andrew Abler tossed 5.0 innings in the start, giving up six runs – four earned – on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
  • Dowling and Alagheband combined to throw four innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and one walk.

How It Happened

  • Dartmouth plated the game's first run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 edge.
  • Harvard jumped in front 2-1 in the bottom of the first as Colasante launched a two-run home run to left field.
  • The Big Green scored five runs in the top of the fourth to move ahead 6-2.
  • The Crimson trimmed the margin to 6-3 in the last of the fifth behind an RBI single from Rickheim.
  • In relief, Dowling did not allow a run across the sixth, seventh, and eighth frames.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Stone drove a bases-clearing double into right field to tie the score at 6-6 before Smith sent an RBI single up the middle to plate Stone and put the Crimson back in front, 7-6.
  • Alagheband closed the game in the ninth, inducing a double play for the contest's final two outs.
