Women’s Rugby Opens Competition at Tropical 7s with Pool Play

TAMPA, Fla. – Senior Cameron Fields tallied a team-high five tries on the day, and the Crimson's elite team posted a 2-1 record with a pair of shutout wins as Harvard University women's rugby opened competition on day one of Tropical 7s on Friday at the Tournament SportsPlex of Tampa.
 
Competing in its first event of the 7s season, the Crimson's elite team notched wins over Army West Point (31-0) and Penn State (52-0) alongside a narrow setback to Trinity Western (24-12). Harvard's open team earned a shutout win over Kennesaw State (33-0) alongside setbacks against SARC Sharks (15-5) and Canadian Misfits (43-0).
 
Harvard concludes competition at Tropical 7s tomorrow – Saturday, Apr. 4 – with the playoffs segment of the tournament. The elite team will open Saturday with a quarterfinal matchup against Brown at 2:40 p.m. In consolation pool play, the open side will face Lander (12:40 p.m.), Clemson (2:20 p.m.), and UNC Wilmington (4:00 p.m.).

Women's Elite: Day One Highlights

  • The Crimson posted a 2-1 record on the day, notching shutout wins over Army West Point (31-0) and Penn State (52-0) before dropping a narrow 24-12 decision to Trinity Western.
  • Cameron Fields led the Crimson with five tries on the day while Skylar Jordan, Sana'a Lunon, and Josephine Mignone each tallied two tries apiece. Madelyn Hubbell, Lennox London, Gemma Ogoke, and Victoria Stanley each added one try.
  • In its opening matchup with Army, Jordan, Lunon, and Stanley all scored tries in the first half as Harvard jumped out to a 17-0 lead. Mignone and Ogoke registered tries in the second half to complete the 31-0 win.
  • In game two against Penn State, the Crimson claimed a 26-0 lead at halftime behind a trio of tries from Fields alongside a try from London. Tries from Hubbell, Jordan, Mignone, and Lunon rounded out the scoring in the second half.
  • In a tight matchup with Trinity Western, back-to-back tries from Fields brought Harvard within 19-12 before Trinity Western held on for the victory.
 

Women's Open: Day One Highlights

  • For the open team, Evie Eyers and Morgan Gibson each recorded two tries while Nellie Fitzpatrick and Courtney Taylor each contributed one try.
  • The Crimson posted a 1-2 record on the day with a victory over Kennesaw State (33-0) alongside setbacks to SARC Sharks (15-5) and the Canadian Misfits (43-0).
  • In the team's opener against SARC, Taylor scored the first half's only try to stake Harvard to a 5-0 lead before the Sharks tallied three tries in the second half.
  • The Crimson earned a shutout win against Kennesaw State in its second game with Gibson and Eyers each scoring two tries before Fitzpatrick tallied the contest's final try. Eyers added four conversions in the game.
