Harvard Heavies Win Title at Eastern Sprints Regatta

Varsity eight rows to victory for program's 35th EARC championship.

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Harvard men's heavyweight rowing team won its 35th EARC Sprints Regatta Championship on Lake Quinsigamond on Sunday. The varsity eight capped off a great day fo racing that saw the top three HUBC boats finish on the podium.

The varsity, stroked by Ben Scott, held off Penn earlier in the day in the prelims before being pushed to the finish by second-place Princeton in the grand final to end the day's races. Ultimately, Harvard crossed the finish line in 5:33.109 to take the title.

Nearing the end of the day, it was a tightly battled second varsity grand final between Harvard and Princeton with each team gaining the advantage at various points of the race before the Tigers pulled in front at the finish. HUBC ultimately took the silver a half second behind Princeton in 5:36.814. The twos, stroked by Tyler Horler, had earlier in the day won their heat in a time of 5:40.483 over Northeastern.

The third varsity eight won silver medal after winning its heat earlier in the day. The HUBC third boat charged late against Princeton and ran out of river before crossing in second in 5:53.747; less than half a second back on the Tigers.

The afternoon session started with the fifth varsity, which went straight to the finals, and came in sixth in 6:26.582. The fourth varsity followed with a fourth-place finish in 6:01.689 that was tightly contested with Dartmouth and Penn for positions two through four.
