Field Hockey Wins Ivy Opener, 2-1, Over Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – No. 7 Harvard field hockey (4-1, 1-0 Ivy) opened Ivy League play with a 2-1 road victory over Dartmouth (1-3, 0-1 Ivy) on Friday Afternoon at Chase Field, improving to 4-1 on the season.

The Crimson controlled the contest offensively, outshooting the Big Green, 29-2, while holding a 19-1 advantage in shots on goal. Harvard also generated 12 penalty corners compared to two for Dartmouth.

Harvard scored once in each of the opening two quarter, with junior midfielder Tilly Butterworth striking first before Rosa Kooijmans tallied her first goal of the season to double the advantage. Dartmouth pulled one back early in the third quarter, but the Crimson defense held the Big Green without another goal to secure its second straight 2-1 victory.

How it Happened

Harvard immediately established control in its first road contest of the season. The Crimson generated four penalty corners and eight shots in the opening quarter while not allowed Dartmouth to record a shot.

After testing Dartmouth goalkeeper, Harvard found the breakthrough in the seventh minute. Butterworth scored at 6:45 to give the Crimson a 1-0 advantage. Harvard continued to pressure the Big Green throughout the remainder of the first frame, with Butterworth and Martha le Huray each creating additional opportunities.

The second quarter was more of the same story as the Crimson's offense continued to put pressure on Dartmouth goalkeeper Kylie McKinley. Eventually, an effort on goal from Le Huray opened Kooijmans to bury a shot past McKinley to double the advantage heading toward halftime.

Dartmouth responded quickly after halftime, as Lucia Compano scored at minutes into the third quarter to cut the Harvard advantage back to one. The goal came on the Big Green's first shot on goal of the afternoon.

Harvard couldn't convert throughout the rest of the contest but continued to apply sustained pressure, forcing the Big Green into making seven saves in the third quarter.

Harvard maintained its lead until the final whistle, even outlasting Dartmouth's woman-up strategy when pulling its keeper for an extra attacker in the final moments.  

Harvard Highlights

  • Harvard improves to 4-1 overall and opens Ivy League play with a victory for the 13th straight season.
  • Tilly Butterworth and Rosa Kooijmans each scored for the Crimson, with both goals coming in the first half. The goal was Kooijmans first of the season and third of her career.
  • The Crimson allowed zero shots in the first half and just two over the entire 60 minutes of action.
  • Harvard earned 12 penalty corners while limiting Dartmouth to two.
  • Sage Piekarski put all three of her shots on goal, while Martha le Huray led Harvard with seven shots and five on target. Butterworth also recorded seven shots, including four on goal.
  • The Crimson now lead 25-23-4 all-time against the Big Green.
