All Concerns and Complaints

Any and all concerns/complaints from student-athletes may be reported to the team’s sport supervisor. Sport supervisors are always an appropriate resource to inform, even when a different administrator is designated as the “primary contact” for an issue. The sport supervisor will refer concerns as necessary and follow the appropriate steps accordingly.

In any case, when a resource within Athletics is contacted that is not the designated primary contact for an issue, that individual will refer it to the appropriate primary contact.

At the conclusion of the review of a concern or complaint, appropriate feedback will be provided to the student-athlete.

The University expressly forbids anyone to take any form of retaliatory action against any member of the Harvard community who in good faith voices concerns, seeks advice, files a compliant or grievance, seeks the aid of the Human Resources, testifies or participates in investigations, compliance reviews, proceedings or hearing, or opposes actual or perceived violations of Harvard University’s policy or unlawful acts.

There may be times when athletic travel and competition cause conflicts with classes. This guide provides help in having the appropriate conversations.
It is advised that student-athletes inform their professors about academic and athletic scheduling conflicts as far in advance as possible.
The team’s sport supervisor is the primary contact when there is unresolved conflict or concern with the resolution.
The sport supervisor will refer to the Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR).
The sport supervisor will follow-up with the student-athlete to confirm the issue has been addressed and if warranted, will consult directly with the FAR.

To report a complaint about bullying follow the steps below.

The primary contact is the team’s sport supervisor.
The sport supervisor will inform the FAS/College designee for reports of bullying.
At the conclusion of the process, appropriate feedback will be provided to the reporter/complainant.

To report a complaint of actions, behavior, language, etc. by an athletics employee follow the steps below.
This process is available for student-athletes only to help them take steps to resolve personal conflicts and to address inappropriate conduct. It is not available for use by family members or other representatives on behalf of the student-athlete.
In many instances, it is best that complaints are raised directly with the individual(s) involved. If this is difficult, the team’s sport supervisor will serve as the primary contact and will be responsible for gathering information/investigating the report.
The sport supervisor will consult with the Deputy Athletic Director for Internal Operations.
If warranted based on severity of concern, the concern will be brought to Director of Athletics. The Director of Athletics may consult with appropriate campus partners, if necessary, including but not limited to Human Resources and the Office of the General Counsel.
At the conclusion of the process, appropriate feedback will be provided to the reporter/complainant.

To report a complaint of discrimination, please follow the steps below.

The primary contact is the Assistant Athletic Director - Community & Team Culture. The Assistant AD will inform designated sport supervisor.
The Assistant Director of Athletics for Community & Team Culture will inform the FAS/College designee for reports of discrimination.

To report a complaint about hazing activity or ask questions about the MA hazing law follow the steps below. For general information on hazing, please see the Student-Athlete Handbook. (To view the relevant state law: Mass. Gen. L. Ch. 269, secs. 17, 18, and 19)
The primary contact is the Senior Associate Athletic Director - Compliance and Student Success or a member of the compliance office staff. Upon receiving a report/complaint, the Sr. Associate AD for Compliance & Student Success will inform the designated sport supervisor and other appropriate athletics staff members.
If a report of hazing is brought to any other individual (coach, sport supervisor, athletic trainer, captain, residential staff, etc.), it must be referred to the Senior Associate Athletic Director - Compliance and Student Success for an investigation and subsequent steps.
If warranted based on severity of concern, the Senior Associate AD for Compliance and Student Success will consult with the Deputy Athletic Director for Internal Operations.
If warranted, the concern will be brought to Director of Athletics. The Director of Athletics will consult with the Office of General Counsel and inform the Administrative Board of the College and/or the appropriate law enforcement officials.
At the conclusion of the process, appropriate feedback will be provided to the reporter/complainant.

To talk with someone in Athletics about a mental health need or concern, you can always contact the Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Health and Wellness. The Associate AD will assist in accessing CAMHS (Counseling and Mental Health Services) or sport psychology resources.
Additionally, there are robust resources available to student-athletes, including the following:
TimelyCare - Twelve free teletherapy sessions. Appointments available at night and on weekends.
CAHMS Cares (617-495-2042) - 24/7 support line for Harvard students and staff who have mental health concerns
If a concern is brought to a student’s primary athletic trainer or other resource within Athletics, it will be referred to the Associate AD for Student-Athlete Health and Wellness.

College Title IX is a resource center for students impacted in any way by sexual harassment or other sexual misconduct, including based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Students can speak with a College Title IX Coordinator to learn about options and access supportive measures, such as academic or housing flexibility. Furthermore, an impacted student may speak to a confidential resource at any time, regardless of their decision to follow the steps below.
The primary contact is a Title IX Resource Coordinator. If a concern related to sexual harassment or other sexual misconduct is brought to a sport supervisor or any Athletics employee, they will share that information with a College Title IX Coordinator who will reach out to the student with information about resources and an option to meet.
It is up to the student whether they want to connect with College Title IX. Speaking with College Title IX does not automatically trigger a formal complaint for investigation. However, students can speak with College Title IX to learn more about the process for filing a formal complaint requesting an investigation of a possible violation of Harvard’s policies.

Any individual in our community (student, coach, athletics department employee, etc) may anonymously report a concern via the form below. Concerns may relate to suspected hazing, bullying, discrimination, student wellness, or NCAA violations.

Athletics Anonymous Reporting Form
Individuals may also choose to submit an anonymous disclosure of sexual harassment or other sexual misconduct to the Office for Community Support, Non-Discrimination, Rights and Responsibilities (CSNDR) by using the Resource for Online Anonymous Disclosures (ROAD).
