Brian Cooney, a native of Alexandria, Virginia, joined the Harvard Athletics Communications staff as a creative intern in August 2023. In January 2024, he transitioned to a full-time role as Assistant Director of Athletic Communications and Social Media Manager. As a Sports Information Director (SID), Cooney oversees communications for Harvard’s four rowing programs, wrestling, and women's rugby. He also manages the primary social media channels for Harvard Crimson, creating consistent and engaging content across all sports.
Cooney plays a key role in the department’s visual branding, using his graphic design skills to shape the identity of football, basketball, and the broader social media presence. His work has been widely recognized, including a highlight from the College Sports Communicators, which awarded his Harvard football gameday poster for the Cornell matchup the second-best gameday graphic of the year for 2023-24. Additionally, Cooney led the branding efforts for Harvard’s Olympic coverage in 2024 and designed the media day background for the same year.
A graduate of Butler University, Cooney holds a degree in sports media and strategic communications.
