John Birtwell

Birtwell, a 2001 Harvard graduate and one of the program'sfiercest competitors, is in his second stint on the Crimson benchand fourth season overall as a member of the coaching staff in2013. Birtwell was a two-time All-Ivy League selection and 1999 IvyLeague Pitcher of the Year.

Birtwell coached with the program in 2009 and returned in 2011after spending a year as a pitching coach for the Florida MarlinsA-affiliate Jamestown Jammers and another year as a writer at ESPNcovering the Cape Cod Baseball League. 

After graduating from Harvard, Birtwell played eightprofessional seasons with three organizations, reaching the AAAwith the Oakland A's affiliate Sacramento River Cats in2006. 

In 2002, Birtwell was a Midwest League all-star for the DetroitTigers' A-affiliate West Michigan Whitecaps. Later that yearhe was named as the Detroit TigersOrganization Minor League Pitcher of theYear. In his professional career, he recorded 384 strikeouts in 349innings with a 2.97 ERA. 

He resides in Boston with his wife, Loula.
