Story Line
The Harvard women's volleyball team heads out on the road to
face Brown and Yale this weekend. The Crimson, winner of three of
its last four matches, looks to get back in the win column Friday
night against the Bears.
Scouting the Crimson
In its last time out, Harvard fell to league unbeaten Penn, 25-15,
26-24, 22-25, 25-16. Senior Lily Durwood led the Crimson with 30
assists and 10 digs and also posted three blocks. Sophomore Sandra
Lynne Fryhofer was second on the team in kills with nine and hit a
team-best .375 for the match. Classmate Christine Wu and senior
Katherine Kocurek added nine digs apiece. Second-year Ann Carroll
Ingersoll paced the Crimson with seven blocks, giving her 15 over
the weekend.
Ingersoll leads the team in kills with 2.83 per set and blocks with
1.10 per set. She is second on the team in service aces with 0.23
per set, while freshman Taylor Docter has a team best 0.27 aces per
set. Fryhofer paces the team and the league in hitting with a .308
percentage. Durwood averages 9.35 assists per set, while Wu
averages 5.02 digs per set.
Scouting the Bears
Brown is coming off a pair of 3-1 losses last weekend to fall to
4-12 overall and 0-5 in conference play. Brianna Williamson
recorded 12 kills in the loss to Columbia, while Moira Gallagher
registered 12 kills in the loss to Cornell.
Williamson leads the team in 2.52 kills per set, while Carly Cotton
paces the squad in digs with 4.97 per set. Spencer Andrews averages
6.75 assists per set and Danielle Vaughn has been a force at the
net, posting 0.83 blocks per set.
The Series: Brown holds a 34-21 lead in the all-time series that
dates back to October 1981. The Crimson and Bears have split the
last three years with the home team winning in the last two
seasons. Harvard swept the Bears in their last outing on Nov. 1,
2008.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale enters the weekend with a 14-2 overall mark and a 3-1 record
in league play. The Bulldogs are second in the league standings
after a 3-2 loss to Penn on Oct. 10. The Bulldogs lead the league
in hitting percentage, opponents' hitting percentage, blocks
and digs.
Cat Dailey leads the team and the league with 4.28 kills per set,
while Kelly Ozurovich paces the team and league in dig with 5.69
per set. Kerry Clavadetscher paces the team in assists with 10.50
per set. Haley Wessels leads in blocks with 0.96 per set, and Katie
Cordell averages a team best 0.36 service aces per set.
The Series: Yale holds a 33-19 advantage in the all-time series
that also dates back to October 1981. Harvard's last win
against the Bulldogs came in 2004 and its last victory in New
Haven, Conn., took place on Oct. 24, 2003. Last year, the Crimson
took the Bulldogs to five sets behind Kathryn McKinley's 26
kills and Anne Carroll Ingersoll's 11 kills.
Leaders of the Pack
Sandra Lynne Fryfoher leads the league in hitting with a .308 clip.
She has 146 kills on 341 attempts with just 41 errors. Anne Carroll
Ingersoll is third in the conference in hitting at .298 and leads
the league in blocks with 1.10 per set. Christine Wu is third in
digs per set with 5.02 and Lily Durwood is fourth in assists with
9.35 handouts per set.
Stopping the Streaks
Harvard snapped Princeton's 12 match win streak over the
Crimson last Friday night, just seven days after stopping
Cornell's nine-match series win streak.
Dig Pink
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Crimson will do
their part with Dig Pink on Friday, Oct. 30. The goal of the
program is to raise funds and awareness for Breast Cancer. Last
Year, the nationwide program had 300 college teams participate and
raised $390,000 for cancer research teams focused on target
therapies and molecular profiling as well as "living with cancer"
organizations nationwide.
Home Again
The Crimson returns to the Malkin Athletic Center for four straight
home contests beginning Friday, Oct. 30. Harvard faces Columbia at
7 p.m.
