Cambridge, Mass. - Gabriel Geronimos scored her
third goal of the game with 39.9 second left on the clock to give
Columbia an 11-10 win over Harvard Saturday afternoon at Harvard
Stadium.
Three players led the charge for the Crimson (4-10, 1-5 Ivy) with
freshman Tyler Petropulos scoring four goals. Sophomore Jess
Halpern and freshman Katie Doherty both had hat tricks, while
tri-captain Sara Flood and senior Kaitlin Martin recorded an assist
each. The four goals for Petropulos equaled a career-high set
against Boston University earlier this year. Holly Glynn led the
Lions (7-6, 1-5 Ivy) with four scores.
The Crimson scored the first goal of the game when Flood met up
with Doherty after 3:25 of play. Columbia answered a little over a
minute later. It was the first of four ties on the afternoon. Over
the next three minutes, Petropulos and Halpern scored to give the
home team a 3-1 advantage. Geronimos and Glynn scored three of the
next four goals to tie the score at 4-4 with 3:53 remaining in the
half. The score remained tied until Brittney Shannon put Columbia
up 5-4 1:24 into the second session.
Doherty scored back-to-back goals less than a minute apart which
gave the Crimson a one-goal lead with 23:45 remaining in the game.
Columbia took control of the game over the next seven minutes,
scoring four goals to pull away 9-6 midway through the second half.
Halpern found the back of the net to interrupt the Lions scoring
streak and pull the home team to within one. Columbia's
Lauren Olsen put one to send the lead back to three goals.
Harvard scored two goals within 46 seconds, both tallies from
Petropulos to make it 10-9. A forced turnover by Delia Pais with
under two minutes to play allowed the Crimson to go on the
offensive one more time. Pais handed off to Halpern in Crimson
territory and the sophomore attacker ran down the field. Halpern
found the open shot and took it to even the score with 1:10 left on
the clock. The Lions won the next draw and managed to score.
Harvard was unable to get the ball on offense before the clock ran
out.
Freshman Kerry Clark made one save in the first half and allowed
just four goals. Junior Katherine Martino turned aside four shots
in the second session. Pais had a team-high three ground balls,
while Martin and Doherty had three draw controls each.
The Crimson hits the road for its final two games of the season.
Up first is the Ivy League finale against Cornell, April 25 in
Ithaca.
