Harvard Takes Sixth at Team Race Nationals

Results

SAN FRANCISCO-The Harvard sailing team placed sixth in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association/APS Team Race National Championship Friday through Sunday at the Treasure Island Sailing Center.

The Crimson posted a 6-8 record to finish sixth among the top eight teams advancing to the Gold Round from the original 14-school field. Harvard finished one win back of fifth-place College of Charleston and two behind Yale for the last berth in the Final Four. Boston College won its second straight national title, with St. Mary's (Md.) and Georgetown also sailing in the Final Four.

Harvard started off with a 5-1 mark in Friday's Group 1 racing. The Crimson posted wins against CofC, UC Irvine, Michigan, Tulane and suffered its only loss to group winner Georgetown. The Hoyas emerged with a 6-0 record. Yale and CofC also moved on to the Gold Round.

St. Mary's matched Georgetown's perfect record in Group 2. SUNY Maritime and Stanford needed an eight-race sail-off to advance to the Gold Round alongside St. Mary's and BC and send South Florida to the Silver Round.

The eight advancing teams raced two round robins with their group-stage results counting toward the first gold round robin. The Crimson posted wins against Stanford and SUNY Maritime in the first round robin and against the Cardinal had the first two finishing pairs in the six-boat competition.

Harvard had four gold wins under its belt heading into the second round robin. There the Crimson handed BC its only loss and also defeated CofC but suffered losses to the other five competing teams to miss the Final Four by two wins.

Competing for the Crimson were seniors Lauren Brants and Jon Garrity, juniors Michelle Konstadt and Winston Yan and sophomores Quincy Bock, Grace Charles, Tedd Himler, Alan Palmer, John Stokes and Meghan Wareham.

The Crimson continued a tradition of strong performances at the regatta. Harvard won ICSA Team Race National Championship titles in 2002 and '03 and placed fifth at last season's championship.

Harvard will finish its season Monday through Wednesday in the ICSA/Gill National Championship.
