CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Harvard Director of Golf
Fred Schernecker and head women's coach Kevin Rhoads have added two
players to the two-time defending Ivy League championship women's
golf program.
Two incoming freshman will add to a program that has dominated
play in the northeast region over the past two seasons. Last year
alone, Harvard won seven of the eight events leading up the NCAA
Championships - it finished second in the other tournament. The
team had three All-Ivy players including Christine Cho, the league
rookie of the year.
Chloe Atchek (Rye, N.Y.) and Katie Sylvan (San Diego, Calif.)
will join the Crimson this fall and try to lead Harvard to a third
straight ivy title - a feat that would be a first in the Ancient
Eight.
Atchek and Sylvan are highly regarded and are hoped to produce
immediately.
"We are very excited for their arrival, and the chance to start
a new chapter in Harvard Women's Golf history," said Rhoads. "They
are both tremendous competitors and have had significant success
that we hope to carry over here."
Sylvan is a four-time Coast League Player of the Year at the
Francis Parker School as well as a four-time Breitbard All-CIF
first team selection. She was recently selected to play in the 2009
Cannon Cup in Flagstaff, Ariz. as a representative of the West
team. The annual tournament pits the 10 best players from the West
against the East and Sylvan helped her squad to a narrow victory in
the national event. As a junior, Sylvan was named an HP Scholastic
Junior All-American and ended 2009 as the 11th-ranked
golfer in the country.
Altchek meanwhile, competed for the Horace Mann School's boy's
team, finishing 2009 as the team MVP and captain at the No. 1
position. A league champion, Altcheck went on to finish second in
the state tournament. She is the younger sister for former men's
soccer players Chris '08 and Charles Altcheck '06. Charles was the
Ivy League Player of the Year in 2006 and led Harvard to the Ivy
championship.
Harvard begins its fall season Sept. 13-15 as an invitee to Golf
Week's Conference Challenge, which will be hosted at the Las Vegas
Paiute Resort Wolf Club.
