CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard
women's volleyball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a
3-1 win over Stony Brook Saturday afternoon at the Malkin Athletic
Center. Three Crimson players recorded double digits kills and
double-digit digs in Harvard's 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 25-18
victory.
Freshman Taylor Docter led the way for the second straight game
with 13 kills, while sophomore Anne Carroll Ingersoll recorded 13
and junior Mikaelle Comrie posted 12. Sophomore libero Christine Wu
had 23 digs, while senior setter Lily Durwood register 47 assists
and 14 digs.
Harvard trailed early in the first set falling behind 3-0. The
Crimson slowly worked its way back into the set, tying the score at
8-8 on a Durwood ace. The two teams battled back and forth for the
next four points to make it 10-10. Harvard scored five straight to
pull away and increased its lead to as many as seven late in the
set. Comrie scored four kills in the first set as Harvard had 12
kills on 35 attempts to hit .314 for the set.
Docter collected six kills in the second stanza as Harvard pulled
away from a 4-4 tie to take a 13-9 lead. The Crimson increased the
advantage to six, 18-12 on two kills from Comrie, another from
Docter and a an attack error on Stony Brook. The Seawolves called a
timeout and won the next point, but Harvard used three more swings
from Docter to take a 21-15 lead. The visiting team won eight on
the next 10 points to pull within 22-21. The Crimson put the next
point on the board, but sided out on its next play. An attack error
on the Seawolves gave the Crimson set point, but Stony Brook got a
big swing from Harmonie Calinda to hold on. But Harvard had the
last word when Ingersoll found Stony Brook territory for the
winning point.
The Seawolves took an early and the Crimson had to play catch up
for the rest of the set. Harvard wouldn't let its opponent
get too far ahead as Stony Brook 's largest lead was four at
19-15. The Crimson won four of the next five points to come within
21-20. The Seawolves won the final five points to keep themselves
in the match.
The fourth set was all Crimson as Harvard led by as many as eight,
17-9. Ingersoll had five kills and Comrie added four to help the
Crimson pull away and maintain the lead. Stony Brook made a run
late in the contest, but errored on match point giving the Crimson
the victory.
Harmonie Calinda led the Seawolves with 21 kills, while Jeannette
Gibbs posted 17 digs. Stony Brook held the advantage in kills,
58-53; digs, 77-72; team blocks, 11-9; and hitting .236-.219.
Harvard had eight aces in the win, while the Seawolves had six.
The Crimson meets unbeaten Toledo this evening in the final
contest of the 2009 Harvard Invitational. First served is scheduled
for 7 p.m.
