Flushing, N.Y. – Harvard women's
tennis player Samantha Gridley captured the Flight F singles title
at the USTA Billie Jean King Invitational in Flushing, N.Y. this
weekend. Gridley also paired with Alexandra Lehman to win two
doubles matches in Flight B.
After her first round opponent withdrew due to injury, Gridley
defeated Annie Hang of Army in dominate fashion, 6-1, 6-1. In the
semifinals, Gridley was matched against fellow Ivy Leaguer Tiana
Takenaga from Columbia. Gridley continued her solid play as she
downed Takenaga 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the finals against
Binghamton's Marina Bykovskaya. In yet another straight set
victory, Gridley garnered the Flight F title defeating Bykovskaya,
6-3, 7-5.
Gridley added two doubles victory to her impressive weekend as
she and Lehman reached the semifinals of Flight B doubles. In their
opening round match Gridley and Lehman beat Diamond Adams and
Nakita Austin of St. John's, 8-2. The duo then defeated
Egzona Morina and Julia Prantl from Fairleigh Dickinson, 8-5.
Boston College's Alex Kelleher and Erina Kikuchi would halt
Gridley's attempt for a second title, beating Harvard's
pair 8-0.
Three other Harvard student-athletes competing captured
victories. Samantha Rosekrans was in action for the Crimson in
Flight A singles where she earned a win over Marija Dzakovic from
Charleston Southern, 6-1, 6-2. Natalie Blosser recorded another
Harvard victory as she defeated Joanna Zwirbulis of St.
John's, 6-2, 1-6, 10-7, in her round of 16 Flight B singles
match. In Flight D singles, Hannah Morrill tallied two victories in
the consolation bracket. Morrill doubled her tournament win total
as she and Blosser secured to wins in the Flight A doubles
consolation bracket.
Harvard will have one weekend off before heading to Hanover,
N.H. to compete in the ITA Northeast Regional Championships from
Oct. 22-25.
