Story Line
The Harvard women's volleyball team returns home
for a pair of Ivy League matchups, starting with archrival Yale
Friday night, followed by Brown Saturday at the Makin Athletic
Center. The Crimson currently sits in sixth place in conference
standings.
History
Yale has a 31-19 lead in the all-time series against
Harvard, taking a 12-match win streak against the Crimson into
tonight's matchup. Harvard last defeated Yale on Oct. 22,
2004 by a score of 3-0.
Harvard trails in the all-time series with Brown as well with a
23-34 all-time record, but has downed the Bears in the three most
recent matches. The Crimson took a pair of 3-0 wins from Brown last
season and captured a 3-0 win to close out the season series in
2008.
Last Time Out
A night after taking league-leading Princeton to five
sets, Harvard fell, 3-0, to Penn last Saturday at the
Palestra.
Mikaelle Comrie led Harvard with six kills and Jennifer Martin
and Kelsey Beck each recorded a service ace on the evening.
Christine Wu recorded a team-high 13 digs in the loss.
About Harvard
Harvard currently sits in sixth place in the league with
a 2-4 conference record. The Crimson dropped a pair of league road
games last weekend to Princeton and Penn.
Taylor Docter leads the Crimson with 131 kills on the season,
Mikaelle Comrie is close behind with 121, and both are averaging
over two kills per set. Anne Carroll Ingersoll has 100 kills on the
season and leads the team in kills per set with 2.13.
Natalie Doyle (231 assists) and Beth Kinsella (318 assists) are
Harvard's top setters, and libero Christine Wu leads the
Crimson with 4.24 digs per set. Teresa Skelly's 60 total
blocks, and 10 solo efforts, are both team-best totals.
Scouting Yale
The Bulldogs come into the match alone in third place in
the Ivy League, capturing wins against Cornell and Columbia last
weekend. Yale began its Ivy campaign with a pair of wins over
Brown.
Bridget Hearst is one of the top hitters in the league and leads
the Bulldogs with 207 total kills and a 3.34 kills-per-set average.
Erica Reetz has 178 kills on the season, is averaging 2.92 per set
and received her second Ivy League Rookie of the Week award
Tuesday. Kendall Polan tops the squad with 576 assists, and Haley
Wessels, McHaney Carter and Hearst all have more than 30 blocks on
the year.
Scouting Brown
The Bears are still in search of their first Ivy League
victory, but have pushed three of their last five league opponents
to five sets. Brown will take on Dartmouth Friday night before
traveling to Cambridge for a Saturday showdown with the
Crimson.
Emma Pastore leads three Brown players who are averaging over
two kills per set with a 2.72 average. Katrina Post is close behind
at 2.51 kills per set while setter Alexandra Rieckhoff is dishing
out 9.49 assists per set. Annika Gliottone enters the weekend
averaging 4.37 digs per set and Kathryn Glickman is contributing
over a block a set on the season.
Dig Pink
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to show its
support, the Harvard women's volleyball team is hosting a Dig
Pink night against the Bulldogs. The goal of the program is to
raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research. The Harvard
athletics marketing department is distributing pink ribbons and
collecting donations. Other activities include a t-shirt toss, a
serving contest and trivia contests between sets.
