CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Ivy League has
announced the names of 80 student-athletes – including 10
from Harvard – who have been named to the fall 2010-11
Academic All-Ivy League team.
The honorees are starters or key reserves on officially recognized
varsity teams who have cumulative grade-point averages of at least
3.0. Each of the eight Ivy League schools nominates five men and
five women from its eligible student-athletes.
The Crimson football team earned two of Harvard's five male
selections, while the women's soccer and women's
volleyball teams each garnered two of Harvard's female
honorees.
Senior Katherine Sheeleigh of the women's soccer team, a
finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, was named to her
second straight Academic All-Ivy team. A native of New
Vernon, N.J., Sheeleigh, a co-captain of the Crimson, also received
a selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District squad
and was named the Ivy League Player of the Year. She
concluded her career as a four-time All-Ivy League first team
choice and led the Ancient Eight in scoring this season with 25
points on nine goals and seven assists. Sheeleigh also ranks fifth
in school history with 31 goals and sixth with 79 points.
Teammate Melanie Baskind, who hails from Framingham, Mass.,
was recently honored on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America
second team after garnering a spot on the ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District first team. A three-time All-Ivy pick,
Baskind, a junior, was selected to the all-conference first team
this season after scoring nine goals and amassing 22
points.
Junior Anne Carroll Ingersoll, a co-captain of the women's
volleyball team , was named All-Ivy League honorable mention after
second-team honors as a sophomore and Rookie of the Year accolades
as a freshman. A product of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.,
Ingersoll led Harvard with 2.35 kills per set and was third on the
squad with 190 total kills.
Classmate and teammate Sandra Lynne Fryhofer was also tabbed to
the Academic All-Ivy squad after earned All-Ivy League honors for
the second straight fall. One of three Harvard players to see
action in all 26 matches in 2010, Fryhofer, a native of Atlanta,
Ga., ranked second on the Crimson in hitting percentage (.272) and
fourth with 186 kills.
Junior Alexandra Jumper of the women's sailing team earned
her first selection on the Academic All-Ivy League team. A
Putnam Valley, N.Y., product, Jumper was named the New England
Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women's Sailor of the
Week Sept. 21 and finished fourth in the A division at the
Women's Toni Deutsch Trophy. She also won the A division at
the Mrs. Hurst Bowl by 18 points this fall.
On the men's side, senior cross country runner Daniel
Chenoweth was named to his third Academic All-Ivy squad after
earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. A native
of Geneseo, Ill., he was selected to the All-Northeast Region team
for the third occasion and garnered All-Ivy League status for the
third consecutive season. Chenoweth was the runner-up at the
Heptagonal Championships and won the Harvard-Yale meet for the
third straight time.
Senior Alan Palmer of the coed sailing team, who hails from
Yarmouth, Maine, was tabbed the NEISA Coed Sailer of the Week Oct.
20. The 2009-10 All-American sailed in the A division in
Harvard's Nevins Trophy victory and placed second in the A
division at the Crimson's win at the Hood Trophy.
Bret Voith, who garnered a spot on the Collegiate Water Polo
Association second team, served as co-captain of the Crimson
men's water polo team this fall. A native of Coral
Gables, Fla., Voith led Harvard in scoring with 38 goals and 31
assists. He also made 32 steals and led the Crimson to a
fifth-place finish at the Northern Division Championships.
Seniors Zar Zavala and Collin Zych of the football team round out
Harvard's fall selections to the Academic All-Ivy League
team. Zavala, a wide receiver from El Paso, Texas, became the
sixth Harvard football player and 50th Harvard student-athlete to
earn a Rhodes Scholarship. He also earned but turned down a
Marshall Scholarship.
Zych, a defensive back from Plano, Texas, was Harvard's
captain this fall, helping the Crimson go 7-3 and 5-2 in the Ivy
League. He tied for the team lead with 79 tackles and 40 solo
stops. A preseason All-America honoree by several
publications, he is a three-time All-Ivy League choice and started
all 10 games at defensive back this fall, pacing the Crimson with
three interceptions.
