Head Coach Tommy Amaker
Tommy Amaker (Duke '87) begins his third season as head coach of
the Harvard men's basketball team. He registered his 200th career
coaching victory Nov. 13 in the 2009-10 season opener at Holy
Cross.
He brings a 217-180 career head coaching record
into the game, including a 109-83 record at Michigan at a 68-55
record at Seton Hall.
Amaker came to Harvard after a six year stint as
Michigan's head coach. Inheriting a program that was reeling from
institutional and NCAA sanctions, he led the Wolverines to the
postseason three times, winning the 2004 NIT title, reaching the
championship game of the 2006 NIT, and advancing to the second
round of the 2007 tournament. The 2006-07 season was Michigan's
second straight 20-win campaign and its third in four years. The
Wolverines were ranked as high as No. 20 in the nation during the
2005-06 season.
The Seniors
On Saturday, Harvard will recognize its senior class - Jeremy Lin,
Doug Miller, Pat Magnarelli and Dan McGeary - prior to tipoff.
The Race
Cornell sits comfortably in first place in the Ivy League at 9-1
compared to a 7-2 record for Princeton and a 7-3 mark for the
Crimson. The Tigers and Crimson are still alive in the race
however, and all three teams are playing for bids to a postseason
tournament. A postseason berth would be Harvard's first since
1945-46 when it went to the NCAA Tournament.
Jeremy Lin for Bob Cousy Award
Jeremy Lin is one of 11 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, given
to the nation's top point guard. Fan voting is open until March 5.
Jeremy Lin Finalist for John R. Wooden
Award
Jeremy Lin is one of 20 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award
which goes to the national player of the year.
Jeremy Lin Invited To Portsmouth
Invitational
Jeremy Lin will play at the Portsmouth Invitational (Va.) in
April. Lin is the first Harvard player invited to the four-day
tournament since Brian Cusworth '07-08.
The Yale Series
Yale leads the series by a count of 112-67 although Harvard has
taken each of the past two meetings including three weeks ago in
New Haven, Conn.
The Last Meeting With Yale
With Harvard missing three frontcourt players and with guards
Jeremy Lin and Oliver McNally having fouled out, Tommy Amaker's
freshmen scored 14 of Harvard's 16 overtime points with 11 coming
at the free throw line (12 attempts) as Harvard carefully managed
the clock in an 82-79 win at Yale.
Brandyn Curry did not miss a shot all night, going
5-of-5 from the floor, 2-of-2 from deep and 3-of-3 at the line for
a career-high 15 points to go with five boards and four assists.
Christian Webster scored all 12 of his points after the break and
hit a trio of clutch triples. Kyle Casey battled for 41 minutes and
finished with 20 points (7-8 FT) and seven rebounds while Dee Giger
provided perhaps the most important two-minute stretch of the year
for Harvard, hitting a 3-pointer from the corner with 26 seconds
left in regulation and connecting on three free throws in OT to win
it.
In all, Harvard's freshmen provided 53 points. The
team also committed just 10 turnovers with dishing out 17 assists.
Yale's Alex Zampier provided a game-high 32 points
(14-15 FT) on a series of impressive fade-aways but the Crimson's
league-leading 3-point defense was also on display, limiting him to
2-of-11 from long range and the Bulldogs a 5-of-19 team mark.
The Brown Series
In a series that dates back to 1900-01 Harvard holds an 87-74 edge
versus Brown in head-to-head competition. Harvard defeated Brown
three weeks ago in providence, R.I.
The Last Meeting With Brown
It was a career-high for Harvard's youngsters as Kyle Casey tied
his best scoring effort of the year with 27 points while Christian
Webster set a new high with 16 points in an 81-67 win.
Casey was electric, shooting 8-for-9 from the
floor, 3-of-3 from deep and 8-of-9 from the free throw line while
adding nine rebounds in 32 minutes. Webster was impressive in 23
minutes off the bench with 6-of-10 shooting (3-6 3-point) and a big
traditional 3-point play as Harvard came back from a second half
deficit to take control. Harvard has come from behind to win 14
times this season.
Trailing by three at the break, Brown scored seven
straight to start the second half in claiming a six-point lead but
a 3-point play from Webster and a crisp baseline reverse stick by
Jeremy Lin made it 57-49 in favor of Harvard at the 11:12. At that
point, the Crimson would pull away in an impressive performance.
Season Sweeps
With its wins Saturday against Columbia, Harvard moved within one
victory of its program records of 19 set back in 1945-46.
The win gave Harvard its first season sweep of
Columbia since 2005-06 and also marked the first time the program
has swept multiple Ivy teams since 05-06 (Dartmouth, Columbia).
This weekend, Harvard will be vying for its first season-sweeps of
both Yale and Brown since winning all four games against the pair
in 1998-99.
The last time Harvard swept three or more season
series came back in 1996-97 (Columbia, Cornell, Yale, Brown).
Sharp Shooter
Oliver McNally surpassed his career-high for points in just 13
minutes of the first half against Columbia on Saturday with 20 of
his 23 points scored in the first half.
He finished the weekend shooting 77 percent from
the floor and 71 percent from long range in averaging 15.5 points
in just 20.0 minutes per game.
Hot Shots
Harvard's win against Columbia saw the Crimson shoot 50 percent
for the game for the 11th time this season. The Crimson is 11-0
when reaching that lofty mark.
Halftime Lead
Harvard is 16-0 this season when leading at the half.
