CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's
tennis team completed its opening weekend of competition Sunday at
the 18th annual William and Mary Invitational with strong
performances from co-captains Holly Cao and Samantha
Rosekrans.
Cao, ranked No. 56 in the nation, began her weekend on Friday
with a pair of straight set victories in Flight A. She first
defeated Virginia's Erin Vierra, 6-4, 6-0, to advance to the
quarterfinals where she downed Dominika Zaprazna of Marshall, 6-2,
6-0. Cao would defeat another Cavalier, No. 45 Lindsey Hardenbergh,
on Saturday in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-2, to earn a spot in the
finals. Unfortunately, Cao would be defeated in the championship by
Connie Hsu of Penn, 6-3, 6-2.
Rosekrans, competing in Flight C, began the tournament with a
victory over Kelly Tidwell of Richmond, 7-5, 6-3. She advanced to
the semifinals after Arina Alilueva of Old Dominion retired in the
second set of their quarterfinal match. Olga Terteac of Virginia
Commonwealth would knock Rosekrans off in the semifinals though,
6-3, 7-5. Rosekrans bounced back and finish in third-place as she
defeated Caryssa Peretz of Virginia, 2-6, 7-5, 11-9, in the
consolation match. Cao and Rosekrans would pair up in Flight A of
doubles, playing to a 2-2 record.
In Flight B singles play, sophomore Kristin Norton and
freshman Natalie Blosser
would each drop a pair of matches before securing victories on
Saturday in the consolation bracket. Norton would defeat Rashmi
Teltumbde of Virginia, 6-2, 7-5, while Blosser defeated Shannon
Betts of Virginia Tech, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-6. Norton and Hideko Tachibana
teamed up in Flight A doubles play to defeat Joanna Dobrowlska and
Diana Ivanova of ODU, 9-8 (4), in the consolation bracket.
Tachibana also added two singles victories in the consolation
bracket of Flight A.
The Crimson's Alexandra Lehman would also tally two singles
victories in the consolation bracket of Flight D. Lehman defeated
Chelsea Davis of Columbia on Friday, 6-0, 6-3, and Maria Voscekova
of Marshall on Saturday, 6-3, 6-4.
Harvard will take a few weeks off from competition before
heading west to compete in the ITA/Riviera All-American
Championships in California, which begin on Oct. 2.
