St. Anselm quarterback Yianni Gavalas led the Hawks in a 10-point fourth quarter rally to defeat Bentley.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Yale quarterback Morgan Roberts and St. Anselm quarterback Yianni Gavalas have been awarded New England Football Writers' Gold Helmets for their exploits in major comebacks.
Roberts, a junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, helped Yale overcome a 21-point deficit with a record-setting comeback in a 54-43 win over Lehigh. It was the biggest comeback at the Yale Bowl in a Bulldog victory. Roberts completed 31-of-39 passes for 376 yards and three scores, while connecting with 7 different receivers. He rushed seven times for 29 yards, including a 5-yard scoring run. Roberts helped Yale pile up 683 yards of offense with 31 first downs.
Gavalas, a sophomore from Manhasset, New York, completed 37-of-49 passes for 386 and two touchdowns, while running for two more scores. Saint Anselm rallied from 10 down in the fourth quarter to knock off Bentley, 38-34, in its home opener Saturday at Grappone Stadium. The Hawks improve to 3-0 (2-0 NE-10) for just the second time ever and first time since 2004 by beating Bentley for the first time in 15 tries. Gavalas, who spread the ball around to five different receivers, put together a nearly perfect second half as he went 21 of 26 for 250 yards and a touchdown, to go along with two more rushing scores and no turnovers, as he orchestrated scoring drives on four of the Hawks' last five possessions to earn the win.
