CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's basketball team saw three separate streaks come to an end Saturday afternoon as Dartmouth overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat the Crimson, 70-61, at a sold-out Lavietes Pavilion.
Harvard (11-5, 1-1 Ivy League) entered the day having won nine straight games versus Ivy League opponents, nine straight games at home, and having taken 11 in-a-row over Dartmouth (8-8, 1-1 Ivy League). Each of those were snapped, however, as the Big Green used a 26-2 run to overcome a 43-29 hole and steal the win.
Wesley Saunders and Siyani Chambers were the only Crimson in double-digits, scoring 13 points apiece. Saunders also contributed five rebounds and four assists, with Chambers dishing out three helpers himself. Jonah Travis matched his season-high, scoring nine points off the bench with seven coming in the first half.
Dartmouth was led by Alex Mitola who scored 18 points and was a perfect 10-of-10 at the line. Malik Gill added nine points and six assists.
Harvard shot just 39.2 percent (20-51) on the day, and committed 18 turnovers which resulted in 21 Big Green points. The Crimson returns to action next weekend as it travels to Princeton and Penn.
The first half featured nine lead changes and eight ties as neither team could pull away. A pair of Saunders free throws gave Harvard an 11-10 edge initially, and Steve Moundou-Missi followed with a pair of baskets to make it six straight points for the Crimson. Dartmouth responded and took an 18-17 lead with Gabas Maldunas at the line, and extended its margin to 21-17 with another Maldunas freebie.
Travis hit a contested turnaround jumper to pull within 21-20, and Corbin Miller regained the advantage for Harvard, shot faking his defender for an easy jumper. After exchanging free throws Harvard retained a 26-25 edge, and Saunders used his patented spin move to put the Crimson in front 28-25 at the break.
Saunders asserted himself early on in the second half, spotting up for an open 3-pointer before finding Zena Edosomwan for a one-handed dunk that brought the capacity crowd to its feet. The senior later found Chambers for a 3 to beat the shot clock, capping off a 10-0 stretch to move the score to 38-25.
Saunders' second trey extended Harvard's lead to 43-29, but a 14-0 run by the Big Green eliminated the deficit and tied the score at 43-43 with 7:44 to play.
Dartmouth took the lead on a Malik Gill and-one, and was in front 52-45 after a drive by Mitola. Miles Wright capped off the 26-2 spree from behind-the-arc, giving the Big Green a 55-45 lead with just 3:21 remaining.
The Crimson continued to push the issue, but Dartmouth answered each time and shot 11-of-14 at the line down the stretch to secure the victory.
