CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's tennis opened its fall season with their own invitational including six other teams; Boston College, Boston University, Connecticut, Columbia, Wake Forest and Yale. Sophomores Ringblom and Jang-Milsten were named champions at the end of the three-day tournament including four draws of singles matches and two draws of doubles.
Day One
In the opening day, sophomore Nikki Kallenberg defeated Boston University Lauren Davis, 6-3 and 7-6 to earn a spot to face Boston College Lexi Borr tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Freshmen Erica Oosterhout also ended the day on a win by beating Srna Stosljevic from Connecticut 6-3 and 6-2. Harvard sophomore Annika Ringblom battled against Samantha Asch from Wake Forest and came up on top, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Freshmen Isabel Jasper eased past the Terriers Kaely Malik, 6-3 and 6-4.
In doubles play, Ringblom and Oosterhout slid past Boston University Iryna Kostirko and Remi Ramos, 8-4, but then the roles were reversed and Katya Vasilyev and Emily Safron from Boston College beat the duo 8-4 in the A-division. Senior Amy He and Kallenberg took a hit against Boston College pair Wan-Yi Sweeting and Asiya Dair losing the opening match 8-3. Harvard's Jasper and Ellen Jang-Milsten ended up on top of a close call against Nada Zaher and Lindsey Mendelson, 8-7.
Day Two
Play on Saturday opened with singles wins in three out of the four draws. Jang-Milsten eased past Wake Forest senior Xue Zhang completing the match in two, 6-2 and 6-3. Jang-Milsten later beat Zhang's teammate Andrea Retolaza in three, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Ringblom finished the day similarly to Jang-Milsten by beating Bulldog Amy Yang 2-6,6-3, 6-4. Her next match was a breeze, beating Lion's Alexandra Solovyev 6-2, 6-4. Oosterhout was no match for the singles red draw where she defeated Demon Deacon Guerin 3-6 and 6-0 and then Eagles' Asiya Dair 6-2 and 6-2.
Doubles action was not as successful as singles play but still made it far in the draws. In doubles A play, Ringblom and Oosterhout lost to Boston College's Katya Vasilyev 8-6 in the quarterfinal match-up. Amy He and Kallenberg lost in semifinals to Eagles' Sweeting and Dair, 8-3 in doubles B-division. The duo of Jasper and Jang-Milsten topped Columbia pair Zaher and Mendelson, 8-4 and then Connecticut Alderman and Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva and Retolaza, 8-5.
Day Three
In the final matches of the tournament on Sunday, two of the four Crimson student-athletes were named champions. Ringblom finished the tournament as the winner of the singles green division after beating freshman Emma Davis from Wake Forest 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Jang-Milsten also ended up on top after ousting Demon Deacon Luisa Fernandez 6-4 and 6-3 in singles blue play. Oosterhout lost to Boston College's Lexi Borr, 6-1, 6-1, closing out her first collegiate finals appearance.
Harvard's doubles pair of Jasper and Jang-Milsten were not able to take the title as Fernandez and Retolaza won 8-2.
The Crimson return to action Sept. 25-27 taking on the Brown Invitational in Providence, Rhode Island.
