NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The top two slots for the No. 3 Harvard men's squash won five-game thrillers to preserve a shutout victory over No. 9 Yale, 9-0, on Friday night in Brady Squash Center. The Crimson (10-1, 5-1 Ivy) swept six matches - No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, No. 7, No. 8, and No. 9 - in its first shutout of the Bulldogs (8-7, 2-4 Ivy) since 2007.
Saadeldin Abouaish braved his fifth five-game match of the season, all coming at the No. 1 slot in Ivy League play. This time the sophomore earned the win over Spencey Lovejoy, 13-11, 7-11, 14-12, 4-11, 14-12, to move to 3-2 in matches going the distance and improve to 9-2 on the year.
Timothy Brownell was also tested in a five-game thriller. The second-year student-athlete at No. 2 rallied from two games back to beat Harrison Gill, 8-11, 5-11, 11-8, 12-10, 12-10, and move to 9-1 this season.
Julien Gosset's match at No. 6 was the only other to last more than three frames, as the rest of the lineup cruised to straight-game victories.
Sean Hughes sweep at No. 3 was his 25th consecutive victory in dual matches. Hughes is now 11-0 this year, while David Ryan's three-game win moved him to 10-0.
Harvard will conclude its regular season on Sunday, Feb. 11 against No. 13 Brown. No. 2 Columbia defeated No. 7 Princeton, 6-3, to clinch a share of its first Ivy League title Friday night. A Harvard win on Sunday against the Bears (7-6, 1-5 Ivy) and a Lions loss to No. 6 Penn would result in a shared title.
