No. 13 Men’s Water Polo Improves to 3-0 on West Coast Trip

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 13 Harvard men's water polo took down No. 18 Cal Baptist (13-13, 2-2 WWPA) 13-9 and Santa Clara (10-9-1, 2-3 WWPA) 13-12 as the Crimson took both of its games at day 2 of the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament. Sophomore Owen Hale totaled seven goals to lead the Crimson on the day as Harvard improved to 20-2, 4-1 NWPC on the season.  
 
Game 1: Harvard 13, Cal Baptist 9
Junior Gabe Putnam bookended the scoring in the first period for the Crimson, which saw them draw level at 5-5 after one. Junior Alex Tsotadze notched his second goal of the game before the half, while sophomore Kaleb Archer scored to make it a 7-7 game at the half.
 
Sophomore Alexandru Bucur got the Crimson on the board in the second half, with Tsotadze and sophomore Max Keck adding goals in the third period. Junior goalie Noah Hodge took over in the second half, saving 10 of the 12 shots he faced in the final 16 minutes. Sophomore Owen Hale scored the last two goals for the Crimson as they took down the Lancers, 13-9.

  • Junior goalie Noah Hodge saved 15 of the 24 shots he faced, a .625 save percentage.
  • Junior Alex Tsotadze totaled three goals, two assists and a team-high four steals.

Game 2: Harvard 13, Santa Clara 12
 Harvard once again played to a deadlock through the first period and were tied at 4-4 after an opening goal from first-year Andrej Basica and a pair of goals from Gabe Putnam. Putnam would add another in the second frame along with Owen Hale and sophomore Mot Stothart, giving the Crimson a 7-5 lead at the half.
 
The Broncos battled back to tie the game at 7, before Kaleb Archer and junior Michael Sonsini scored consecutive goals to restore the two-goal cushion. With that lead, Sonsini and Hale would each net two more goals as the Crimson saw out a narrow 13-12 victory in a true road game at Sullivan Aquatic Center.

  • Sophomore Owen Hale led the Crimson with four goals to go along with an assist.
  • Juniors Michael Sonsini and Gabe Putnam both netted hat tricks while combining for 5 exclusions drawn.

Game Notes
  • Harvard has won ten straight games, its longest winning streak of the season.
  • The Crimson took down Cal Baptist 15-12 and Santa Clara 19-17 at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament in 2019.
  • Harvard notched its 20th win of the season, marking seven straight seasons reaching the 20-win mark.
  • The Crimson secured its third win over a ranked opponent this season, after previously taking down No. 16 Bucknell and No. 9 Princeton.
