Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Hockey Races Past Saint Anselm in Home Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the first ever meeting between the two programs, the Harvard women's hockey team (2-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) upended Saint Anselm (1-5-0, 0-0-0 NEWHA) by a score of 6-2 on Saturday (Oct. 23) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

First-year Ellie Bayard got the scoring started early for Harvard, sliding home the rebound off a shot from Dominique Petrie to give the Crimson the advantage.

Saint Anselm would soon answer, however, netting a short-handed goal from senior Erin Meyers at 7:55 of the first period.

A pair of Harvard penalties at 14:30 of the first period gave the Hawks a five on three power play, but the Crimson were able to fend off the attack to keep the score level at 1-1 at the end of 20 minutes.

The second period of action featured a trio of goals. First it was Harvard senior Keely Moy, tallying her third of the season with a beautiful wraparound off an assist from line-mate Brooke Jovanovich at 14:13. Less than two minutes later, Saint Anselm's Kenadie Cooper tied the game back up on the power play. Then, with just 45 seconds remaining, Dominique Petrie continued her line's hot start to the year, picking up a loose puck in front of the net and firing it past the goalie to make the score 3-2 in Harvard's favor.

The Crimson took control in the game's final frame, rattling off three goals early in the period to secure the victory. Bayard scored her second of the game just 2:09 into the third, before senior winger Becca Gilmore found the back of the net twice within a span of 1:34 to bring the score to 6-2.

Harvard Highlights
  • First-year Ellie Bayard tallied the first two goals of her collegiate goal, striking just 1:15 into the contest and then again at 2:09 in the third period.

  • First-year Taze Thompson went 16-2 in the faceoff circle. Thompson is now 31-3 in faceoffs this season.
  • Jenna MacDonald, Jovanovich, Moy and Maryna Macdonald led the team in +/- on the day with +3 marks.
