Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 14/15 Men's Ice Hockey Earns Decisive 9-3 Win at Dartmouth in Season Opener

HANOVER, N.H. – First-year forward Matthew Coronato had a four-point night (two goals, two assists) to lead a pack of eight different goal-scorers as No. 14/15 Harvard men's ice hockey (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC Hockey) earned a 9-3 win at Dartmouth (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC Hockey) in its season opener.

Junior defenseman Henry Thrun had a goal and two assists, and four more players added multiple point nights – Sean Farrell (goal, assist), Baker Shore (goal, assist), Casey Dornbach (two assists) and Wyllum Deveaux (goal, assist).

Junior goaltender Mitchell Gibson made eight saves in 40 minutes, while Derek Mullahy (collegiate debut) and Derek Schaedig split time in the third period. Harvard outshot Dartmouth 37-19 for the game.

Playing for the first time in 601 days, the Crimson got off to a flying start despite taking a penalty in the opening seconds.

Coronato poke checked the puck away from Dartmouth's Tanner Polocsik and skated in alone from the red line, finishing the play with a shot over the shoulder of Justin Ferguson to make it 1-0 Harvard at the 1:10 mark.

On Harvard's first power play of the night, the Crimson converted with a beautiful series of passes. Thrun fed down low to Dornbach. Dornbach's cross-ice feed found the tape of junior forward Nick Abruzzese, who finished with a low one-timer into the back of the net to make it 2-0 at 4:23.

The Crimson exploded for six goals in the second period, starting with a two-on-one feed from Coronato to Deveaux for his first goal of the year at 2:09 of the second period to make it 3-0.

Dartmouth cut the lead to 3-1 at 2:43 of the second period but Farrell answered with a power play goal for Harvard, batting a rebound out of the air at 7:56. Shore made a great play at the Dartmouth blueline to force a turnover and finished the play with his first goal of the year at 9:44.

After Harvard killed off a penalty moments later, senior defenseman Marshall Rifai found Thrun coming out of the penalty box for a breakaway and he beat Dartmouth goaltender Justin Ferguson (28 saves) over the shoulder at 12:40 to make it 6-1.

First-year defenseman John Fusco scored his first collegiate goal on a power-play one timer at 18:10. Then senior forward Jack Donato closed out the scoring for Harvard on another 2-on-1, taking a pass from Shore and beating Ferguson right out in front of the net at 19:22 to make it 8-1.

Coronato closed out the scoring for Harvard at 6:47 of the third period, redirecting a shot-pass from Sean Farrell into the net.
