CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior captain
Nick Abruzzese had a goal and three assists, and sophomore forward
Alex Laferriere added two goals and an assist to lead No. 15/16 Harvard men's ice hockey (5-2-1, 4-1-1 ECAC Hockey) to a 5-2 win over Brown (1-5-0, 1-5-0 ECAC Hockey) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Junior goalkeeper
Mitchell Gibson made 18 saves in net to earn the win, as Harvard outshot Brown 40-20 for the night, and finished a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, while adding a power play goal.
First-year forwards
Zakary Karpa and
Matthew Coronato also added goals for Harvard, which improved to 4-0 at home this season.
Harvard got off to a flying start, as Abruzzese notched his second goal of the season on an effort play, crashing the net on a rebound off a
Ryan Siedem shot to put in a rebound at 2:14 of the first period.
Harvard used a three-goal second period to pull away from the Bears. Laferriere made a beautiful forehand-backhand move and slipped a shot past Kania to put Harvard up 2-1 at 3:17. After Brown's Thomas Manty responded with a goal moments later at 5:21, first-year
Zakary Karpa scored his first collegiate goal on another great individual move.
Karpa got the puck and cut to the front of the net just as a Harvard penalty expired, beating Kania with a backhander at 8:57 to make it 3-1.
Coronato rounded out the second-period scoring with a power play goal, as tic-tac-toe passing from Farrell to Abruzzese to Coronato led to a one-timer into the back of the net at 10:06.
Laferriere scored his second goal of the game on an end to end rush at 10:54 to make it 5-1. Brown's Jake Harris added a late goal for the Bears at 15:13.
