Vician, Ebbinge, Arlotti Goals Lead Men’s Soccer Past Columbia, 3-2

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Junior Martin Vician and first-year Alessandro Arlotti each tallied a goal and an assist, sophomore Willem Ebbinge scored a goal, and Harvard University men's soccer defeated Columbia University, 3-2, in its regular season road finale on Saturday night at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
 
The Crimson (7-5-3, 2-2-2 Ivy) found the back of the net in the 26th, 67th, and 81st minutes to go ahead 3-0 before the host Lions (1-10-4, 0-4-2 Ivy) netted late goals in the 82nd and 88th minutes in a comeback attempt. With the win, Harvard moved into fourth place in the Ivy League standings with eight points and secured itself a season above .500 overall for the first time since 2016.
 
Vician opened the game's scoring as he ran onto a long ball from Arlotti and directed a one-timed shot past the goalkeeper at the 25:17 mark. Ebbinge extended the advantage to 2-0 at the 66:49 mark, driving a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal after collecting a pass from Vician. Arlotti made the score 3-0 at 80:52, rising up to head home a ball off a cross from senior Håvard Hjermstad. Columbia's David Walley and Paolo Primavera netted closed the contest's scoring with goals at 81:21 and 87:08 before Harvard held on for the win.

  • Junior Martin Vician notched his sixth goal and third assist of the season and now has 15 points on the year. In Ivy play, he now has four goals and 11 points on the season. Vician has notched points in five of his last seven games and registered three or more points in a game for the second time this year.
  • First-year Alessandro Arlotti tallied his eighth goal and sixth assist of the season and now has 22 points on the year. In conference play, he now has three goals, two assists, and eight points. Arlotti has posted points in six of his last seven contests and in nine of his last 11 matches. He netted his fifth game-winning goal of 2021.
  • Sophomore Willem Ebbinge scored his second goal of the season and now has 13 points on the year. He has posted points in six of his last seven outings. Ebbinge netted his first goal in conference play and now has six points in Ivy competition on the year.
  • Senior Håvard Hjermstad and first-year Marko Isakovic each tallied his first point and first assist of the season.
  • Junior goalkeeper Oskar Nilsson made one save and improved to 4-5-3 on the year.
  • For the match, Harvard led in shots (18-7) and shots on goal (10-4) while Columbia held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Among Harvard's field players, first-year Jan Riecke, senior Håvard Hjermstad, senior Fernando Docters, and first-year Ludovico Rollo all played the full 90 minutes.

  • Harvard improved to 39-26-5 in the all-time series with Columbia.
  • The Crimson moved to 3-1-1 in its last five contests.
