POTSDAM, N.Y. – No. 9/9 Harvard women's hockey (4-2-0, 3-2-0 ECAC Hockey) saw a late advantage slip away as the Crimson fell to No. 10/RV Clarkson (9-1-2, 4-0-0) Saturday afternoon, 4-3, in what was a narrowly decided overtime thriller.
Two third period goals put Harvard in front, 3-2, before Clarkson sent the game to extra time with just minutes remaining. A back-and-forth overtime session ended with a Golden Knights goal by junior Stephanie Markowski, keeping Clarkson unbeaten in conference play.
The opening period saw each team score one goal. First, Clarkson found the back of the net on the power play at 11:11 when Gabrielle David tucked home a rebound off a shot by teammate Nicole Gosling. Then, with less than two minutes remaining in the period, the Crimson moved up the ice quickly with junior
Kristin Della Rovere finding linemate
Anne Bloomer, who proceeded to fire a wrist shot into the top right corner to even the score.
The action on the ice really picked up in period number three. At 8:37, Harvard captain
Emma Buckles capitalized on a big rebound, slapping the puck past Clarkson goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk to tie the game. Less than two minutes later,
Keely Moy gave the Crimson its first lead of the day, gathering a loose puck in front of the goal and burying it into the left side. The Golden Knights would not be derailed, however, as the team from northern New York found the equalizer with 3:31 remaining with Frenette scoring her second of the day.
The open ice of the three-on-three extra session created several chances for both teams.
Dominique Petrie hit the right post just seconds into overtime, before Clarkson rang one off the crossbar themselves on an odd-skater rush. The Crimson would have another opportunity to end the game when Bloomer hit the post with a backhand on the breakaway. Finally, Markowski sent the crowd home, sliding a forehand under the pads of
Becky Dutton to give Clarkson a 4-3 victory.
