Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No. 10/10 Women’s Hockey Defeats No 7/7 Boston College, 5-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two power-play goals helped propel No. 10/10 Harvard women's hockey (5-2-0, 3-2-0 ECAC Hockey) past Beanpot rival, No. 7/7 Boston College (6-3-0, 4-2-0 Hockey East), 5-2, in a Friday night clash at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

Senior winger Becca Gilmore scored two goals and added an assist, while line-mate Anne Bloomer also tallied three points in the victory on a goal and two helpers.

The first period featured few quality chances for either team and was seemingly headed to a scoreless conclusion before junior forward Anne Bloomer beat the horn, redirecting a point-shot from Mia Biotti for her fourth goal of the season with just one second left on the clock.

What the opening period lacked in action, the second period more than made up for. Boston College's Abby Newhook stuffed home a rebound at 4:19 to even the score, before Harvard retook the advantage on the power play when a shot from the right circle by Crimson defender Maryna Macdonald beat the Eagles' netminder. At 16:37 in the second session, Gilmore added to the Harvard margin, sliding a backhand into the net after a shot from first-year Jenna MacDonald produced a rebound opportunity. Just when it seemed like the period was coming to a close, Boston College's Alexie Guay made the deficit just one heading to intermission, snapping a shot from the point that found its way through a crowd in front of the net and into the Harvard goal.

Harvard would put the finishing touches on the night in the closing period. First it was Gilmore, scoring the Crimson's second power play goal of the night at 11:55 in the third. Gilmore snuck behind the defense on the right wing and buried the puck off a terrific feed from Kristin Della Rovere. Then, at 16:11, Dominique Petrie and Bloomer broke past the Eagles' defense and put the game out of reach with Petrie firing a one-timer into the net off a centering pass from Bloomer.

Harvard Highlights:

  • Anne Bloomer and Becca Gilmore led Harvard with three points apiece on the night.
  • Bloomer was a team best +3 in the game.
  • Becca Gilmore peppered seven shots on goal in the contest to pace the team.
  • Harvard went 2-for-3 on the power-play, its second time scoring two goals when up a skater this season.
  • Nine Crimson registered at least one point, the second highest total of the season (St. Anselm, 10)
  • First-year Kayley Crawford made her collegiate debut.

Game Notes:

  • Harvard now leads the all-time series against its Boston neighbor, 41-21-1. The Crimson has now won two of the last three matchups between the schools.
  • Anne Bloomer (Harvard) and Alexie Guay (Boston College) each scored at 19:59 in the first and second periods respectively.
  • The Crimson outshot the Eagles by a margin of 40-20.
  • Harvard held a 39-26 edge on faceoffs for the night. The Crimson has gained an advantage in faceoffs in six of seven contests on the year.
  • Katey Stone is one win away from 500 career wins. Stone would be the fourth coach of a women's program to reach the threshold and the first female to do so.
