BOSTON, Mass. – Junior defenseman
Henry Thrun scored a power play goal, but in a tightly played contest, No. 6/10 Harvard men's ice hockey (4-1-0, 3-0-0 ECAC Hockey) fell 2-1 in overtime at Northeastern (8-4-0, 4-2-0 Hockey East).
The Huskies' Gunnarwolfe Fontaine won it at :25 of the 3-on-3 overtime period on a breakaway. Harvard outshot Northeastern 21-17 for the night and carried the play at times but could not maintain its one-goal lead.
A penalty-less and scoreless first period saw each team lay heavy hits, with the Crimson having a slight edge in shots on net (6-3). Sophomore forward
Sean Farrell had Harvard's best scoring chance at the 12:00 mark, on a partial break down the right side, but his shot went high and wide of the net.
Thrun broke the scoreless tie, on Harvard's first power play chance of the night. With Northeastern's Jakov Novak in the penalty box for tripping, Harvard worked the puck up high to Thrun, whose one-timer beat Devon Levi at 4:27 to make it 1-0.
That was one of three power play chances in the period for the Crimson, but Harvard failed to cash in on the next two.
Northeastern tied the game late in the frame, as Jeremy Bucheler finished a 3-on-2 with a backdoor tap in at 17:17 to make it 1-1.
Harvard would have a 5:00 major power play when Aiden McDonough was whistled for a knee-on-knee hit at 4:08 of the third period. But the Crimson could not convert, setting up the 3-on-3 overtime period and Northeastern's eventual game-winner.
