Olivia Coffey ’11, Team USA Women’s Eight Finish Fourth at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

TOKYO – Radcliffe heavyweight rowing alumna Olivia Coffey '11 and her Team USA crew placed fourth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Regatta. In Friday's A Final at the Sea Forest Waterway, Coffey and her teammates were clipped by China for a spot on the medal stand by just 1.57 seconds.
 
Team Canada took home the gold medal with a finish of 5:59.13 and New Zealand earned silver in 6:00.04. China's bronze medal time was 6:01.21 with the USA crossing at 6:02.78.
 
The USA crew began racing on Saturday, July 24 earning an automatic advance to the finals with a first-place finish in its heat, clocking 6:08.69. After crossing the opening 500m mark in third, Team USA surged to lead Romania (6:09.95) and Australia (6:18.95) through the finish. In the other heat, New Zealand took the automatic advance with a sprint from third to first in the final 500m.
 
In the repechage on Wednesday, Romania, Canada, China and Australia filled out the finals field for Friday.
 
In the medal race, Team USA spent much of the race pulling fifth, however after the 1000m mark, China made its move to overtake Australia for third and in the final 500m United States pushed past the Aussies for fourth.
