NEWARK, De. – No. 15 Harvard field hockey (3-0) picked up its first win over a ranked opponent this season with a 2-0 victory at No. 19 Delaware (2-3) on Friday night (Sept. 10) at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
Senior captain
Hannah Pearce scored her team leading third goal of the season on a first quarter penalty corner, and first-year
Lucy Leel notched her first career goal early in the fourth quarter to help the Crimson seal the victory.
Junior goalkeeper
Ellie Shahbo, in her first start of the 2021 season, made six saves to earn the shutout in net, Harvard's second consecutive game allowing no goals.
Pearce scored at 7:27 of the first quarter on Harvard's first penalty corner of the night, scoring from straightaway to put the Crimson ahead 1-0 early on.
Harvard outshot Delaware 5-2 in the opening half of play, limiting the Blue Hens to just one penalty corner in the first 30 minutes.
The Crimson survived Delaware's second half pressure, as Shahbo make a pair of saves in both the third and fourth quarter to keep the home team off the board.
Leel scored on a partial breakaway just 3:35 into the fourth quarter to give Harvard a two-goal lead.
