WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Sophomore
Avery Donahue scored the game-winning goal in overtime to break a scoreless tie and lift No. 15 Harvard field hockey (4-0) to a 1-0 win at No. 22 Monmouth (4-2) on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Harvard is off to its best start since the 2014 season, recording four straight wins on the road to start the year.
Harvard has also shutout its last three opponents, as junior goalkeeper
Ellie Shahbo picked up the win with one save on the day.
Donahue scored at 3:17 of the overtime period, taking a pass from first-year
Megan Joel and beating the Monmouth goalkeeper one-on-one to give the Crimson the victory.
After a relatively defensive first half, the Crimson outshot Monmouth 5-1 in the final 30 minutes, including a penalty corner with 3:21 to play in regulation, resulting in a
Hannah Pearce shot that sailed wide of the net.
Harvard outshot Monmouth 12-3 overall for the game and was on the front foot for the entire overtime period, with four shots. Ultimately, Donahue found the back of the net to lift the Crimson to the victory.
