Men’s Tennis Ends Chowderfest On The Podium

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -  The Harvard men's tennis team wrapped up action at Chowderfest yesterday, Sept. 26th, with sophomore Henry Von Der Schulenburg finishing second overall in singles draw. Von Der Schulenburg placed just behind Ben Shelton, losing to the ultimately undefeated Dale Junta '58 winner of the 2021 Chowderfest out of Florida in a back-and-forth three-set match, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

"I'm proud of how our team competed all weekend," said the Scott Mead '77 Head Coach for Harvard Men's TennisAndrew Rueb '95. "All the hard work they put in the past year really showed. We learned a lot and I can't wait to get back on court to help us get better."

The Crimson's day three success was not limited to Von Der Schulenburg's second-place finish. In singles play, junior Steven Sun defeated nationally ranked Lukas Greif of Florida, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5. In doubles action, the duo of Korsgaard-Lins was able to take down their Florida opponents Goodger-Grant, 6-3.

Additionally, individual Harvard players put up impressive results throughout the tournament. Seniors Harry Walker posted a singles record of 2-1, taking down Max Mckennon of ASU and Patrick Maloney of Michigan. First-year Danny Milavsky went 2-1 as well, beating out Nicola Cigna of ASU, and Will Grant out of Florida. The Crimson were bolstered by strong showings from both captains, with Senior Brian Shi going 2-1, knocking down players from ASU and Michigan, and Senior Steven Sun going undefeated, sporting a 3-0 record with wins over ASU, Michigan, and Florida competitors.

The Crimson accomplished this against stiff competition, with three of the four other teams competing having appeared in the 2021 NCAA DI Men's Tennis Championship, including ultimate national champion Florida.

In regard to having tennis back at Harvard, Rueb stated, "Boston was buzzing with tennis this weekend. After 18 months on hiatus, the Beren Tennis Center was once again rocking with terrific college tennis. It is such a special spot for matches and to see all our supporters, friends, students and alums in the stands was overwhelming."

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Philip Hjorth of Cal-Berkely was awarded the Ned Weld Sportsmanship Award.

Harvard Highlights
  • Von Der Schulenburg finished the tournament with a 2-1 singles record, dropping his only match to eventual champion Ben Shelton of Florida.
  • Two nationally ranked opponents in Lukas Greif of Florida and Josh Goodger of Florida fell to Crimson racquets in the final day of competition.
