No. 19 Field Hockey Defeats Maine, 2-1, On Pearce's OT Game-Winning Goal

ORONO, Me. – Senior captain Hannah Pearce scored twice, including a game-winning goal off a penalty corner in overtime to lift No. 19 Harvard field hockey (1-0) to a 2-1 win at Maine (0-3) on Friday afternoon.

Just under four minutes into extra time, Harvard earned its 10th penalty corner of the contest. With first-year Avery Donahue on the injection, Pearce corralled the pass and fired into the low left corner at 4:01 of overtime to win it for Harvard.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sofia Castore made two saves in her debut for Harvard to earn the win.

In a scoreless first half, Harvard outshot Maine 5-1, with Donahue recording the Crimson's chance about 6:00 into the game, a shot kicked away by Maine goalkeeper Mia Borley (five saves).

Pearce broke the scoreless tie early in the third quarter, scoring from straightaway on a penalty corner at 11:29 to make it 1-0.

Minutes later at 9:28 of the same frame, Maine's Poppy Lambert evened the score at 1-1 on a penalty corner for the Black Bears.

Harvard defended well in the fourth quarter, with Castore making a kick stop midway through the final period of regulation and Harvard defending two straight penalty corners in final minutes to send the game to overtime.
