CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Roles were reversed on Saturday as No. 10/RV Harvard (11-5-0, 8-3-0 ECAC Hockey) flipped the script on No. 8/9 Yale (11-4-1, 6-3-1 ECAC Hockey) with a 3-1 victory on home ice for its fifth consecutive ECAC Hockey win.
The Crimson, who fell to Yale by the same score line back on Nov. 12 in New Haven, Conn., were able to turn matters in their own favor during the second-leg of the season series.
First period goals from defenders
Kate Glover and
Emma Buckles were all that was required for senior netminder
Becky Dutton, who made 20 saves against 21 Yale shots for her second victory of the weekend.
Harvard grabbed the early lead just 1:26 into the contest when Glover circled patiently with the puck before flipping a wrist-shot past Yale's Gianna Meloni to give the Crimson the advantage.
The Bulldogs picked up two penalties in the ensuing minutes, resulting in a five-on-three opportunity which Harvard would capitalize on. At 4:52, after a shot from
Maryna Macdonald was blocked by the Yale defense, the Crimson captain Buckles collected the puck and ripped a slap-shot which nicked Yale's Charlotte Welch before finding its way to the back of the net.
Welch would inflict some revenge just over three minutes later, however, scoring a goal of her own off a pass from Vita Poniatovskaia.
The second period featured plenty of Yale pressure in the offensive zone, but Dutton turned aside all 13 shots sent her way to preserve the 2-1 lead for Harvard through 40 minutes.
The Crimson defense was able to alleviate some of the strain on their goaltender in the final period, holding the Bulldogs to just three shots during the final 20 minutes. With Meloni off for the extra-attacker as time wound down,
Keely Moy blocked a Yale shot which then ricocheted to
Anne Bloomer, who proceeded to skate the length of the ice before sliding the puck into the empty net with just seven seconds on the clock. The buzzer sounded moments later, signaling the 3-1 final.
