Box Score HAMDEN, Conn. – On Saturday, No. 9/9 Harvard (14-5, 11-3 ECAC Hockey) managed to do something that it hasn't accomplished since the 2015-16 season – beat a top-five nationally ranked team. The Crimson achieved this noteworthy feat with a 3-2 win on the road at No. 4/4 Quinnipiac (16-4-3, 8-3-0 ECAC Hockey), scoring once in all three periods and holding off a threatening Bobcats' attack late in the final frame.
Emma Buckles,
Anne Bloomer and
Shannon Hollands comprised a trio of Harvard goal scorers, while
Becky Dutton won her fifth consecutive game in goal, making a season-high 31 saves in the process.
Harvard got the early advantage in the contest just 3:01 in when senior captain
Emma Buckles took her own rebound, skated around the net, and tucked home a wraparound to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead.
The margin would double in period number two as the team's leading goal scorer,
Anne Bloomer, played give and go with linemate
Kristin Della Rovere off a Bobcats' turnover and buried a forehand past Quinnipiac's netminder Corinne Schroeder at 13:16.
The Bobcats pulled within one at 7:50 in the third period courtesy of Sadie Peart, the first goal surrendered by Dutton in more than 10 periods of work. Just over seven minutes later, however, Harvard sophomore
Shannon Hollands reclaimed the two-goal margin, lighting the lamp on the power-play with her third goal of the year at 14:52. After Schroeder stopped the initial attempt from
Dominique Petrie, Hollands located the rebound in front and, before the goaltender could recover, slid the puck into an open net
Despite the two-goal deficit, the Bobcats' pressed on. After pulling the goalie for the extra-attacker, senior Zoe Boyd made it 3-2 with 2:36 left on the clock. Looking for a late-equalizer, Quinnipiac mounted continued pressure in the Harvard zone, but Dutton answered the call each time with several crucial late saves to preserve the lead, and the victory, for the Crimson.
