Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey Shut Down by RPI, 2-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Despite outshooting the Engineers 39-25, Harvard men's ice hockey (9-7-1, 7-5-1 ECAC Hockey) fell 2-0 to Rensselaer (11-14-3, 6-7-0 ECAC Hockey) on Tuesday night (Jan. 25) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

RPI goaltender Jack Watson earned the shutout, stopping all 39 shots faced in just his fifth game of the year.

RPI's John Beaten scored on a fluke goal that deflected off a Harvard skate and past Crimson goaltender Mitchell Gibson (23 saves) at 6:57 of the second period to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead.

The Crimson had a golden opportunity midway through the third period when Lauri Sertti was whistled for a five-minute boarding penalty, giving Harvard an extended power play at 5:40 of the period.

Despite firing six shots on net, and hitting two posts, including sophomore Sean Farrell's shot off the crossbar late in the man advantage, the Crimson could not find the tying goal.

In a scoreless first period, Harvard outshot RPI 15-4, and had several chances to score. First-year Alex Gaffney had perhaps Harvard's best chance midway through the frame, but his backhander from right in front was kicked away by RPI goaltender Jack Watson.

The Engineers scored the game's first goal early in the second period, which was more than enough for Watson.

Jakub Lauka added an empty netter at 19:51 to seal the win for RPI.
