ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior defenseman
Marshall Rifai and first-year forward
Matthew Coronato scored second period goals and junior goaltender
Mitchell Gibson made the deciding save in the shootout to help Harvard men's ice hockey (10-7-2, 8-5-2 ECAC Hockey) earn a shootout win at Cornell (13-4-3, 8-2-3 ECAC Hockey) after a 2-2 regulation tie.
The Crimson, which outshot Cornell 36-22 for the game, took five of six regular season points from the Big Red on the season.
After falling behind early on in the game - Cornell's Brendan Locke scored a power play goal at 1:23 of the first period – Harvard took command of the contest, dominating possession and chances.
Midway through the opening period sophomore defenseman
Ian Moore's shot from the high slot trickled just wide of the net.
Later in the period, junior forward
John Farinacci feathered a no-look pass in the slot to
Alex Gaffney, but he could not get his stick on the puck on the open side.
But early in the second period, on a power play that carried over from the end of the first, Rifai tied the game on a one-timer off a feed from Moore at 1:21.
Then just over three minutes later, it was Coronato's turn, as he put in his own rebound to give Harvard a 2-1 lead.
Cornell's Matt Stienburg scored at 11:01 of the second period to tie the game.
A defensive third period (Harvard outshot Cornell, 6-5) sent the game to 3-on-3 OT and then the shootout.
Harvard scored on three of its six attempts, with
Casey Dornbach,
Alex Laferriere and
Nick Abruzzese all potting shootout goals. Abruzzese's goal, through the five hole of Ian Shane, set up Gibson's winning kick save on Sullivan Mack, sending the Harvard bench out on the ice to mob the goaltender.
