CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior forward
Alex Laferriere had a four-point night (2G, 2A) to lead No. 13/14 Harvard men's ice hockey (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECACH) to a 5-2 win over Dartmouth (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECACH) in its season opener at Bright-Landry Hockey Center. Senior
Henry Thrun and sophomore
Alex Gaffney each added a pair of assists, and senior
Mitchell Gibson made 17 saves to earn the win in net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite eventually outshooting Dartmouth 47-19, it was the Big Green who got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the opening period to take an early lead.
Matt Hubbarde scored from the high slot in the opening minute of play (:51) and about five minutes later, Trym Lokkeberg batted a puck out of the air at 5:33 to make it 2-0 for the visiting team.
But Harvard stormed back in the second period, as Laferriere found the net at 7:59 after a partially blocked shot off the stick of Thrun put Dartmouth goalkeeper Cooper Black (42 saves) out of position.
With Harvard in the midst of a major penalty kill, Laferriere and sophomore defenseman
Jack Bar teamed on a shorthanded 2-on-1, with Bar putting away a backhander for his first collegiate goal to tie the game at 2-2 at 12:09.
Early in the third period, Laferriere gave Harvard its first lead of the night, breaking in alone down the right wing and firing a shot that found its way through Black at 3:37.
Harvard scored its first power play goal of the night to help salt the game away at 10:47. With Mathew Coronato taking a cross ice feed from Laferriere and finding the net from right out in front to make it 4-2.
Sophomore
Zakary Karpa added an empty net goal at 17:48 to finally seal the win for the Crimson.
