Pellicci Makes 53 Saves, Women's Hockey Drops Close Contest to Yale

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard women's hockey (1-2-0, 1-2-0 ECAC) battled until the final whistle in a close 2-1 loss at the hands of the No. 9/8 Yale Bulldogs (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC). The Crimson got a goal in the final two minutes of play from Gabi Davidson Adams, but could not find the game-tying score in the final push.
 
Alex Pellicci saved a career high 53 shots to backstop a Crimson defensive effort that blocked 24 shots in the contest.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Harvard had the first quality chance of the game midway through the first period on a Shannon Hollands breakaway attempt. The junior's backhand attempt found the pipe and ricocheted wide to keep the game scoreless.
  • Alex Pellicci had a strong start to the contest, making seven saves in the first ten minutes.
  • Yale got on the board at 13:13 in the first period to take a 1-0 lead.
  • At the end of the first period, Yale led 1-0 despite Pellicci making 17 saves and her team combining for 10 blocked shots.
  • Yale sent a flurry of shots at Harvard in the opening five minutes of the second period, with Pellicci making another eight saves to calm the game down.
  • The Crimson's best scoring chance in the second frame came at the end of the period, when Yale stopped three Harvard shots and jumped on the loose puck as time expired.
  • Through two periods, Harvard had put 22 shots on net but could not find the twine.
  • The Harvard penalty kill held off the Yale Bulldogs three times in the first 14 minutes of the third period to keep the game close.
  • Yale put another tally on the board at 15:12 in the period to push its lead to 2-0.
  • Gabi Davidson scored her first career goal at 18:15 in the third period to cut the 

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS

  • Anne Bloomer led the way offensively as she tallied a team high eight shots on goal.
  • Kristen Della Rovere was impressive in the faceoff dot as the captain won 20 of 28 attemtps.
  • Defenseman Mia Biotti and Jenna MacDonald led the team in blocks with four each.
  • Paige Lester got her first point of the year off a block that sprung Gabi Davidson Adams on a breakaway.
  • Alex Pellicci shattered her previous career best after making 53 saves including many key saves to keep the Crimson close.
  • The Crimson put 38 shots on goal in the effort.

The Crimson will be back on the ice tomorrow night to take on the Brown Bears in another ECAC and Ivy League showdown. The action will begin tomorrow at 3 pm at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center and can be streamed live on ESPN+.
