Murdoch's Dramatic Game Winner in Double OT Lifts No. 15 Field Hockey Past UMass-Lowell, 2-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Siofra Murdoch scored the game-winning goal with no time on the clock in double overtime to lift No. 15 Harvard field hockey (9-3) to a 2-1 win over UMass-Lowell (9-4) on Sunday afternoon at Berylson Field.

Harvard Highlights

Harvard dominated the opening half, outshooting UMass-Lowell, 9-0, and out cornering the River Hawks, 4-0, but the Crimson only led 1-0 at the break.

First-year Bronte-May Brough scored her team leading sixth goal of the of the season on one of Harvard's first penalty corner opportunities of the game.

Junior Mazarine Broze inserted to first-year stopper Kitty Chapple, who fired a shot from right to left into the cage with 8:33 to play in the first quarter to make it 1-0 Harvard.

The score remained that way at the break, and the visiting River Hawks elevated their play in the third quarter.

Senior goalkeeper Ellie Shahbo made her first stop of the day on a UMass-Lowell penalty corner just six minutes into the third quarter, sprawling to her right to make a stick save.

With less than a minute to go in the quarter, Shahbo made another big stop on a shot by Berbel Rozema from in close to keep Harvard in front.

However, Rozema evened the score for UMass-Lowell with just over a minute to play in regulation, cutting inside the top of the circle and firing a well-placed shot into the back right corner of the net to tie the game with 1:13 to play.

Neither team broke through in the overtime frames until Harvard earned a series of penalty corners with under 20 seconds to play. On the second penalty corner, after UMass-Lowell goalkeeper stopped Bronte-May Brough's initial shot, Murdoch batted the rebound into the open net to give Harvard the dramatic victory.
