ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Senior captain
Henry Thrun scored twice, and senior goaltender
Mitchell Gibson made 35 saves to help No. 9/9 Harvard men's ice hockey (7-0-1) earn a 4-4 tie at No. 5/5 Michigan (9-5-1) in front of a sold-out crowd on Friday night (Nov. 25) at Yost Ice Arena.
Junior forward
Alex Laferriere and first-year forward
Joe Miller each added goals for Harvard, which remained unbeaten on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Gibson was sharp early on – making several key stops, including three on an early Michigan power play in the first period.
But the Wolverines struck first, as Adam Fantilli's shot from the slot put the Wolverines up 1-0 at 10:58 of the opening period.
Harvard responded with two quick goals late in the period to take a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.
First, senior captain
Baker Shore forced a defensive zone turnover then fed Thrun at the left point. Thrun fired a wrist shot through the screen of classmate
Wyllum Deveaux and into the net at 14:48 to tie the score at 1-1.
Minutes later, a high-low pass from sophomore
Alex Gaffney set up an incredible shot from
Alex Laferriere from below the left circle, into the net under the far post at 17:16 to put Harvard ahead.
Harvard took a two-goal lead early in the second period, as first-year forward
Joe Miller put in a rebound off a shot from the point from senior defenseman
Jace Foskey at 4:00 to make it 3-1.
Late in the second period, Ethan Edwards cut the lead back to one at 17:23.
But Harvard responded on a power play to open the third period, as Thrun jammed in a rebound of a
Sean Farrell shot to make it 4-2 at 1:16.
Harvard's two goal lead was short-lived, as Nolan Moyle scored at 3:00 for Michigan. Then 10 minutes later, Philippe Lapointe tied it for Michigan with a shot from the high slot at 13:07.
In 3-on-3 overtime, Harvard went on the power play at 1:11, as sophomore forward
Matthew Coronato just missed a chance in front, but stayed with the puck on the same shift to draw the man advantage on a hold behind the net.
Harvard couldn't convert however, and Gibson came up with his biggest stop of the night on a breakaway for Gavin Brindley just after the Michigan power play expired, keeping the game tied at 4-4.
