CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 6/6 Harvard (19-6-0, 14-4-0 ECAC Hockey) earned the victory in its final Ivy League contest of the regular season, blanking Princeton (9-12-4, 7-9-2 ECACH) for the second time this year with a 2-0 win on Friday afternoon at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Harvard, who defeated the Tigers earlier this season in New Jersey, 1-0, has now played 120 minutes against Princeton this season without conceding a goal.
Lindsay Reed posted her first shutout of the year in net, improving her record to 4-3-0, while
Becca Gilmore and
Brooke Jovanovich were the game's two goal scorers.
The first 20 minutes came and went relatively quietly with neither team getting on the scoreboard. Harvard outshot the visitors, 9-5, in the period, but Princeton netminder Cassie Reale, who was making just her second start this season, held the Crimson scoreless.
Senior
Becca Gilmore put Harvard ahead at 15:53 in the second, scoring her 16th goal of the season on the breakaway off a perfect stretch pass from
Anne Bloomer. Gilmore received the pass in stride as she crossed the blue line ahead of the Tigers' defense and slid the puck between Reale's pads for the score.
As it turned out, Gilmore's tally was all that was needed for Harvard, but
Brooke Jovanovich made it 2-0 with her fourth goal of the season just 1:50 into the third period. After Gilmore skated the puck the length of the ice along the right boards, the winger was able to find a trailing Jovanovich in the middle who proceeded to wrist the puck into the open net.
Princeton managed just five shots in the final 20 minutes, all of which were turned aside by Reed, preserving the shutout and the 2-0 victory.
